    • Hmm.... the F5E Tiger II way back in the 80s???

It gave the RSAF a "supersonic" fighter... and still going strong after the upgrade 20 years+ after it first entered service....

    • Wow, hard to say - do you mean the most impact militarily, politically or tactically?

My candidates (not ranked in anyway or by monetary costs) are:

      1. AMX-13 tanks. These were the first in the region in the late 1960's. It got the Malaysians to really take notice and be more respectful of us.

      2. Our just retired MGBs - probably the most heavily-armed small vessel around the region. When commissioned in the mid-1970's, they were armed with Gabriel missiles that were highly successful in the 1973 Yom Kippur War against Egyptian and Syrian Russian-equipped vessels.

      3. E-2C Hawkeye. Raised more than an eyebrow in the region as it dramatically increased our "eyesight" hundreds of km away from our "little red dot".

      4. Our several hundred M-113 APCs in the 1980's. These were the basis of our fast-moving, powerful armoured brigades and are the pioneers of today's combined arms divisions.

      5. Our formerly Sjoormen-class submarines. The initial purchase made our neighbours sit up and take notice (probably caused the M'sians to buy the Scorpene to avoid being shamed). A good relationship Sweden got us 2 of  their AIP-equipped subs later on.

    • The F-16s and the Leo2A4. A really formiable air force and armoured force enviable by others in the region.

    • Subs, our water is never really suited for subs operations but a 2nd hand sub gives us a very useful corvert ops capability & forced our neighbors 2 buy subs 2,very ex sub which cant use their full capability in our waters where e $ could be use elsewhere

    • If you expand the meaning of "purchase". I would like to say that the best SAF 'purchase' is the cohorts of NSmen that got enlisted everyday....

Why they are the best 'purchase'?

      -

Salute to our all NSmen pass and present....

Why NSFs are the best 'purchase'?

      - Paying them peanuts save the money to enable the SAF to buy those nice 'toys' listed about...

      - Having the huge bulk of of them provided the SAF the manpower to build a ORBAT that is larger then what our small country can afford

      - After the purchase are 'refunded' back to society, provide the SAF with a ready-pool of large manpower to man the expanded war-time ORBAT.

Salute to our all NSmen pass and present....

    • My take is the AMX-13.

First in the region. Firepower were upped many times upon their arrival.

      Next is the E2C.

But I have a feeling the best purchase ever would be the HIMARS.

    • Best pruchase is subjective over time but I'd say the most ground breaking one was the purchase of the AMX-13s. The first time we made light of the bulliyng tactics of the Malaysians and opened up their eyes big big.

    • I would say the Vastergotland submarines are the best buy.

They may be second-hand, but at least they'll be upgraded to the Sodermanland class with a Stirling AIP engine.

How much did we pay..... US$128 million or something, right? At that price, it's a steal.
