Observers tagging and trailing coalition forces on operations is the most likely scenario.
I would think that it would be pretty difficult, even with heavy censoring, to base a platoon or company-sized deployment of armed SAF peacekeepers in a forward operating base to conduct regular security patrols. Pretty much fricking impossible with the spotlights of the world media trained on Afghanistan. Might be plausible in a slight sense if they sat on their butts and did nothing, but that would be counter-productive. Chances are, something's going to happen that will catch attention. Afghanistan is not East Timor and Oruzgan is not Cova Lima.
In terms of operational experience to be gained, the SAF would indeed miss out of if it does not commit, at some point in time or another, regular combat soldiers to the theatre. If East Timor was a BMT for our ADF peacekeepers, then Afghanistan would be a full-fledged ATEC if they are deployed to hot zones like Helmand, Oruzgan and Kandahar. Apologies if it's a callous analogy. Perhaps it's already happening now. We might never know for certain.
Or perhaps it will never happen.
Because I doubt the average Singaporean truly understands the threat that global terrorism poses to us. Perhaps it's not worth a cabinet minister's seat in a GRC if body-bags come home from distant lands.

I cannot remember the exact age I underwent my circumcision operation. Perhaps age nine or ten.
Oh, and "operation" is a grand word to use for my experience. It was more of a scalpel session and now that I think about it, a surgery hobbyist from the Dark Ages could have carried it out. Before the circumcision, I anxiously enquired with my peers about their own experiences, and there was reassuring talk of fancy lasers and rings and painlessness.
I remember being laid down and a blindfold was wrapped around my eyes. However, Mr. Doctor did not realize his blindfond tying skills were fairly inadequate and I was able to witness the entire event as my I was able to peek out underneath the cloth. I was a fairly brave boy and tried not to show any fear, though I wonder today if the trembling in my voice was tangible. The doctor was a kindly old man who tried his best to cheer me up, and I tried my best to laugh at his small jokes and small talk. "How old are you, adek? Wah.. big boy already ah. How's school? Must study hard, you know." In the background, his wife, who also doubled as his nurse, carried a tray of sleek and delicate silver surgical equipment that I would have thought more appropriate for a woman in labour undergoing a Caesarian.
I remember a final shrill laugh from myself, a pathetic attempt to tell mysef that this is going to be a walk in the park. I am fearless. I know no pain. I kept telling myself that.
I almost blacked out at what happened next. A scream caught in my throat as his wife injected a two-inch long syringe into what you people will call my lan jiao. It was the most painful sensation I have ever experienced in the whole of my life, now and then. It was the sharpest of pains into the most sensitive of areas. Later, I was told the injection was for painkilling purposes, to numb the nerves. Painkilling? You nearly killed me with pain!
Following that, came the cutting. With a scalpel, the skin of my kukubird was slowly and not so precisely sliced off. I watched in morbid horror and cursed the doctor for not tying the blindfold tighly enough and allowing me to watch as an unwilling spectator. Round and round the scalpel went, around the head of my penis. The skin peeled off like the leavings from a pencil sharpener as a pencil is rubbed against the razor. I watched as my raw flesh was uncovered and unwrapped. I was being skinned alive.
After it was done, I sat up, trembling. On a tray, were several long, thin shreds of skin that formerly house the head of my instrument. In between my legs was a raw piece of meat, oozing pus and dirty blood. I was too shocked for words. I was too shocked to even cry. I stared unblinkingly as the nurse gingerly picked up the tray with her gloved hands and disposed my scalped pieces of skin into a bin.
Ever since that day, my pain tolerance has been pretty high! Cheers mate. :)

How many here think our commitment to Afghanistan will escalate within the next five years? First, you must cordon the block with Leopard MBTs from 48 SAR and the whole of 7SIB. Meanwhile, Primus from 21 SA zero in on the building while Chinooks deploy Pegasus howitzers for added punch. Must use Chinook, coz heli-deployment very stylo. LRRP from 1st Commando will insert 3 days prior to the operation to recce the place and mark targets with lasers. Apaches launch hellfires onto every level while F-16s and F-15s drop JDAMS. SOF will conduct free-fall from Super Pumas and land on the roof and blaze down ten stories while Guardsmen rappel head-first down from more helis and crash through glass windows. Night-vision gear and infrared opticals are mandatory regardless of time of day. Meanwhile, CDF, COA and Defence Minister have a grandstand view of the whole excercise.

Yes, I am merely highlighting the possible dangers our servicemen face. To reiterate, the Singapore contingent will be based alongside the NZDF PRT and will face the same threats. The previous year's rotation have obviously returned - but MINDEF has not released the date of departure and duration of deployment of the current teams. They might already be there, or they might be leaving soon. Anyone have any news? Anyway, our teams are rotated on a 3 month basis and that is usually half the time of what most servicemen from other countries serve.
I am encouraged by the fact that we are sending professionals to face operational risks, unlike a certain's country cavalier self-declared Christian missionaries last year.

Latest report just in from Radio New Zealand News.
Posted at 5:58am on 01 Apr 2008
A patrol of New Zealand Defence Force vehicles in Afghanistan has been hit by an improvised explosive device.
The Defence Force says the four-vehicle patrol was en route in the Bamyan province to conduct a mobile medical clinic on Sunday.
No one was hurt in the explosion, which damaged the front lights and windscreen of one of the vehicles.
The Defence Force says the four-vehicle patrol was en route in the Bamiyan province to conduct a mobile medical clinic.
It says the patrol secured the scene and awaited the arrival of bomb-disposal experts, who are investigating.
The patrol is part of New Zealand's 100-strong Provincial Reconstruction Team, which is charged with improving security and helping reconstruction in Afghanistan.
Source : http://www.radionz.co.nz/news/latest/200804010558/34bc8143
For those not aware, the SAF deployed a five-man dental team and another five-man engineer team to Bamyan province, Afghanistan as part of the New Zealand Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) at Camp Kiwi. This year, we're sending out two rotations of 5-men engineering teams again to Bamyan, and, interestingly, a 20-man medical team to Tarin Kowt, the capital of Oruzgan province. Oruzgan is a hotbed for Taliban insurgents, with the Dutch and Australian forces stationed there coming under intense attack just last year. Look up the Battle of Chora.
Bamyan has been labelled the most safest and benign province of Afghanistan, renowned for its natural beauty. It is also the province where the famed giant statues of Buddhas, carved into cliffs, were blown up by the Taliban back in 2000 (IIRC). The population of Bamyan is largely made up of Hazaras, an ethnic group that faced immense persecution under the Taliban for being generally Shia muslims. In 1997, 10 000 Hazaras were executed by the Taliban in a genocidal campaign. Hence, I assume, though assuming seems a ludicrous thing to do sitting in my chair in Yishun right now, that the Bamyan locals are generally tolerant of the International Security Assistance Force's (ISAF) presence.
But now, a bomb, an IED to be precise, has gone off, in of all of provinces, Bamyan. Those New Zealand soldiers could have easily been killed. And those New Zealand soldiers could have easily been an SAF soldier on his way to teach kids about dental hygiene or building a bridge.
Food for thought.
I see a similar parallel in our Afghanistan commitments to those of our East Timor/Timor Leste peacekeeping contributions in that they have increased slightly from last year. Last year, it was ten men on the ground, officially. This year, add another twenty man-medical team operating in one of the top three hottest provinces in the A-stan. Perhaps we'll see a platoon or company of SAF peacekeepers from the ADF on the ground somewhere around 2010? The ongoing crisis in Afghanistan has no end in sight, and experts are predicting that the current conflict might drag for another ten, twenty even thirty years. Given the country's history of two fricking millenia of more or less continuous warfare, I reckon that that's not a long shot.
Hope our compatriots go there, do their jobs, and come home in one piece. Peace.

It's a psychological thing.
I bet you only had your first pussy recently, am I right? Wait, don't bother telling me I'm right. I know I am.
I will tell you the two primary factors behind your predicament, assuming your partner is reasonably attractive and does not possess the looks of rush-hour roadkill.
Firstly, you're jerking your little sausage way too much at home. Probably more than once a day, sheerly out of habit. You're too used to shooting your load only through the sensation of your hands and hence, when faced with a good old cheese pie, it feels alien. I bet you asked your girl to give you a little shake. Doesn't work too good, right? That's because girls usually don't have that much strength especially if she is inexperienced, or you're just not accustomed to a different stroking pattern.
Solution? Cut back on the porno and let the kettle boil a little longer. Cease all rubbing and wrist excercise activities if you anticipate a session within 2-3 days. The disadvantage to this, however, is that your love juice will probably stink a little more than how it usually smells. Kinda like spoilt milk, but worse. Too bad for the girl - but who gives a **** about her, hah!
Secondly, it's a mental thingy as well. You've spent the last few years, since that time you got your first bit of hair on your ugly ballsack, doing it alone. And now there's someone with you. Adds a subconscious-pressure, believe me. Just be patient, take it easy. Don't freak out. Alot of teenagers are facing this problem due to over-exposure to pornographic materials since they were twelve and under-exposure to the real deal.
What I can recommend you doing is try to get her to play out little fantasy. Maybe you always wanted to do doggy-style, or with her hands bound. Or your hands bound? Whatever works. I don't care. It helps, a little. Personally, I'm a big fan of male over female dominance, and you will be amazed by how many girls are turned on by their pet fantasies of being cute, little, helpless and innocent things. You will also be surprised, that many of them surprisingly enjoy dirty-talk. Call her a slut in bed. Spank her. Coax the devil out of her.
After a few sessions, you'll be spitting volcanoes in no time.
P.S : Yes, women generally enjoy playing the submissive one in bed. However, that attitude disappears the moment that moment is over. :(

I think hor, nowadays, both guys and girls think too much.
The guys who bitch about paying will most likely end up with foreign wives. Whining is not going to get them anything of standard. The girls who complain that Singaporean men are sub-standard are probably fantasizing bumping into a White Prince Charming around Clarke Quay. Doesn't happen that often, really. Singaporean women are to Ang Mor men what Vietnamese women are to Singaporean men.
Hey, I don't believe relationships are about money, and neither does my partner. When I first started dating my girlfriend, I spent around $3K on our first three months alone. After that I went to school, and went totally broke. I thought that would be the end of us. The cliched No Money, No Honey. Yet, she's still around and loves me just as much, probably much more now than in the past. In fact, the situation is reversed. She's now drawing $1K monthly as a nursing student under a hospital bond and she pretty much insists on paying everytime we eat out. Me? I get by with fifty bucks for two weeks. I try my very best to pay but sometimes, I just can't. She understands and it's not an issue for her. For her, the more important issues that should be closer to our hearts is the time we spend together, my fidelity to her ;), the future we plan together.
My girlfriend is a wonderful Singaporean woman. She is three years older than me. She can easily get a guy who drives her around and spends loads of dough on her. But she knows that pretty much noone can love her as much as I do. Her last boyfriend before me was a supervisor at her working place who used to drive her around for lunch breaks. Me? I was at the same company.. sweeping floors and doing other saikang for $5 an hour. I don't have anything close to a car. I sold my bicycle away so that I could afford giving her a decent anniversary present for all the unconditional love she has shown to me. Her family was shocked that she could be dating such a loser. I'm not even good-looking! But she has stood by me, ever loyal, for more than a year and I am very thankful for her patience with my shortcomings.
There are good local women out here, men just have to try harder. Vice versa.
Have a nice day.

National pride versus 2(3?) generations of males having their brains fried by NS? A bumi policy -untenable anyway- versus constant paranoia towards neighbours, having no support whatsoever?
Sometimes I really pity you men. Being used as pawns by the rulers while having your language faculties and other parts of your brain slowly wrecked by NS. And then wondering why the government doesn't give you rights commensurate with foreigners.
Hi.
I'll just like to point out a couple of likely scenarios if your average Singaporean male did not serve his National Service.
First example ; Pedra Branca will not be an issue. Why? Because we won't be having our RSN missile corvettes patrolling around that rock and our NDU guys hanging their legs and MP5s out of helicopters overhead to ensure that our right to national sovereignty is not threatened. We can face other foreigners in the eye and know that we are not a country of total wusses.
Secondly, imagine the cost of your PUB bill without the presence of an SAF. Malaysia would play havoc with the water rates. Maybe a ringgit per litre for all you care. Maybe lima puloh sen. Price of an essential good goes up, the rest of the market follows suit. Everything in your life, from buying a bowl of laksa, buying a packet of panadol, having a baby, rises up tremendously. Inflation occurs. Trade deficit tumbles. Economics, baby. Singapore is reduced to a third-world country, where you take a shit in a little hut with no flushing, and an ah pek comes around at 5am daily to dispose of the daily human waste of your kampong. Yeah, kampong. The government probably wouldn't be able to afford to build HDB flats for you. Don't talk about NEWater and desalination plants - we won't be able to afford those, either.
As was mentioned, Gandhi is the exception, not the rule. The Swiss were not invaded during World War 2 by Nazi Germany not because they marched up and down the Alps on hunger strikes, but because they had a dedicated and committed military that could stop German panzers in their tracks coupled with the serious terrain advantages. History has shown that emulating the Swiss model is a more reliable and efficient way of ensuring your survival.
There are very wide political, economic and social implications if we were to dump NS, and if you are not aware of them, then well, I would advise you to do take some time to ponder a little.
Have a nice day.

unfortunate but whats the alternative? follow the parents sleep on roadside?
Oh, believe me, I know quite well about the unofficial policy of discrimination in the Singapore Armed Forces. An RSAF captain once shrugged his shoulders and explained to me the lack of personnel in sensitive vocations as "simply a matter of geography."
This matter deserves another thread altogether.
Have you ever wondered why SOME chinese feel that way towards SOME of the malays? It take two hands to clap. I'm not saying all malays are like that or all chinese are good, I'm just saying that there ARE malays who are racist (encountered before personally) and there ARE chinese who will be racist back to them. We live in a non-ideal world, and certain things like these cannot be changed cos if there's a fault, everyone is at fault, if there's no fault, everyone can say they are innocent.
So in other words, let people speak all they want. By telling them not to pass racist comments, they will tell you something like "also got some malays say racist thing to me leh".
So just let it be.The attitude of "letting it be" smacks of sweeping things under the carpet. During WW2, the vast majority of 70 million odd Germans decided to close one eye towards the discrimination of the Jews and the Holocaust happened. While this is an extreme example, such historic precedents bode ill for us who live in a society whose fabric is not as strong as we might like.
"Ala cheena say malay, malay say cheena back fair fair mah.. just relac lah.. owaes lyk this one.. cheena say ah neh black black ah neh call us munjen fair mah.. way of the world lah.."
I hope this is not the attitude carried forward by Singaporeans.
I am not crying foul for the Malays.
I am crying foul for what saddeningly seems to be a small minority of Singaporeans who are sick of the poison that is racism. I do not care for the colour of your skin; you can be ah beng, mat, ah neh or serani, but I will condemn anyone who attacks your race with unjustified remarks.
The reality is that many of us are coloured by personal negative experiences, but the question is are you big enough to rise above petty defensiveness?
Racism is only one of the ugly social divisions that divide Singaporeans; on top of that Singaporeans are also slowly being split apart into classes based on education/background/income.
My appeal is simple for Sgforumers. Stop and discourage overt racism, as so wantonly displayed here, directed at any race whatsoever. Moderators, please take firmer action.
I apologize so much for digressing from the topic. I felt the need to address the certain ugly remarks posted here.

I acknowledge that the Malays here are relatively behind their Chinese and Indian counterparts in almost all areas - but statistics have shown as a community they are by and large catching up. However small the percentage, the university enrollment of Malays are increasing. Drug problems are nowhere near the catastrophe they were during the 1980s. The biggest issue facing the Malay community is the rise of social problems such as high divorce and abortion rates. You have to understand that the current generation is suffering from the failings of those beforehand - socio-economic problems are always a vicious cycle. Therefore, I find it admirable that the the lower echelons of the Malay community are at last making significant progress at breaking out of this cycle.
Such issues though, are not my main irritant in the postings of this topic.
What has social and economic problems got to do with racial harmony and tolerance?
If you're poor and uneducated, I still have a social responsibility, as a fellow human being, to show you respect. You don't spit at any man for no good reason, no matter if he is a millionaire or the unfortunate Chinese aunty who resorts to selling tissue paper at kopitiam for her earning.
The human tendency to moralize is forgivable. Even ignorance, to a certain extent, is pardonable. But the human urge to discriminate and sling mud at another group for being of a different colour cannot be tolerated for the sake of our humanity and basic decency.
My appeal to all members of SgForums is to don't let yourselves down by passing off the odd callous or racist remark. In attempting to degrade another race, you're just degrading yourself.
Thank you, and have a nice day.

I acknowledge the lack of brains on the part of this couple but the contempt and outright racism visible in this thread disgusts me. We should drop racial harmony day - it is a farce. More than four decades after the race riots it is apparent that racism is still deeply entrenched within out society. It has only been driven underground, in a more subtle sinister manner.
Look at the replies here ; many convey no sympathy - only contempt and disdain.

I agree with the first point ; the Indonesian military is far from being a competent force. 10 Sukhois to cover their territory I daresay is less than sufficient. However, we have to keep in mind that no matter what, small steps are small steps. It's the extent of exerting a greater strategic role within the region that is of concern to me.
But then again, maybe my concerns are unwarranted. I highly doubt between Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia, nobody is seriously intent on starting any conflict. All bark and no bite for all three states - alot like our vaunted SAF. This region hasn't seen open conflict for four decades and I don't see it occuring anytime soon, especially now there is greater consciousness regarding the importance of regional economic integration.
So my message to military nuts here is we don't need to get excited and up in arms, pardon the pun, over every military deal in the region.

It's never nice to compare but I recently read in the Strait Times about Hyundai's boss, accused of embezzlement. Just so you guys can take a look between Singapore and South Korea.
Know how much he embezzled? S$90 million if I'm not wrong.
So what was he sentenced to? Community service. What form of community service? No, he doesn't have to strap on a vest and pick up litter. He's sentenced to writing articles for newspapers and giving lectures on business ethics. Oh yeah, on top of all that, he has "pledged" to donate a billion to charity.
So yeah, it's true - money can buy you out of jail.
edit - I have to add that the South Korean Courts' reasoning behind the "sentence" is that he is a critical figure of the South Korean economy, seeing how he is the head of Hyundai, the sixth-largest automaker globally. However, I fail to see how just one man, though he is the president, can cause such critical damage to such a powerful economy. Surely the support infrastructure isn't that weak?
Hopefully Durai's appeal doesn't get through and he has to serve time between bars.

Indons have recently purchased a pair of Kilo-Class submarines from Russia. Kilo submarines are purportedly one of the quietest diesel-power undersea vessels in the world, even though they are well over twenty years old. The deal happened when Vladimir Putin pulled over for a pit-stop on the way to Sydney.

This clearly highlights the role of external major powers such as Russia in "instigating" arms races. From what I see, Russia is trying to exert a greater strategic influence in the Far East as of late.
Indonesia itself is probably trying to outdo Singapore and Malaysia.

Hi. I'm a guy and I sort of have the very opposite of a premature ejaculation problem. I suffer from delayed ejaculation.
I wanna know what causes this and are there any ways to overcome this problem? I've been pretty sexually active with my gf but I never can seem to come even with a pretty hard erection and some strenuous action. I don't have erectile problems btw - I get turned on easily and it stays rock hard. Just that I can't get the juice out.
I can only pinpoint a few :
1. Performance anxiety - I think too much about having an orgasm and I lose sight of it.
2. Poor sex? Me and my girl aren't very experienced.. we get turned on but don't quite know how to go with the flow naturally and how to finish it off.
I know that some of you may think it's a blessing to last long and I used to think until it has become a form of sexual frustration for me not to be able to achieve "release".

Hi. I'm a newbie, so you should sprinkle more liberal amounts of salt on my suggested training programme rather than OPT's. My reasoning is cutting out overall volume in favour of greater intensity. It's really a case of KISS. Keep it simple, stupid. Favourable for the time-strapped and the not overly gung-ho about bodybuilding.
Mondays and Fridays
Chest and Back
A) Incline Bench Press
B) Dumbbell Bench Press (Or flat on the bar, doesn't matter. Insert your argument about full range of motion >here<)
C) Lat pull-downs
D) Bent-over barbell rows
Wednesdays
Shoulders and Legs
A) Leg Presses
B) Squats
C) Military Presses
D) Barbell Rows
1 warm-up set
3 working sets of 8 reps
Work-out a tempo that's higher on the eccentric side. Maybe a 2040, depending on the excercise really.
