Observers tagging and trailing coalition forces on operations is the most likely scenario.

I would think that it would be pretty difficult, even with heavy censoring, to base a platoon or company-sized deployment of armed SAF peacekeepers in a forward operating base to conduct regular security patrols. Pretty much fricking impossible with the spotlights of the world media trained on Afghanistan. Might be plausible in a slight sense if they sat on their butts and did nothing, but that would be counter-productive. Chances are, something's going to happen that will catch attention. Afghanistan is not East Timor and Oruzgan is not Cova Lima.

In terms of operational experience to be gained, the SAF would indeed miss out of if it does not commit, at some point in time or another, regular combat soldiers to the theatre. If East Timor was a BMT for our ADF peacekeepers, then Afghanistan would be a full-fledged ATEC if they are deployed to hot zones like Helmand, Oruzgan and Kandahar. Apologies if it's a callous analogy. Perhaps it's already happening now. We might never know for certain.

Or perhaps it will never happen.

Because I doubt the average Singaporean truly understands the threat that global terrorism poses to us. Perhaps it's not worth a cabinet minister's seat in a GRC if body-bags come home from distant lands.

I cannot remember the exact age I underwent my circumcision operation. Perhaps age nine or ten.

Oh, and "operation" is a grand word to use for my experience. It was more of a scalpel session and now that I think about it, a surgery hobbyist from the Dark Ages could have carried it out. In the background, his wife, who also doubled as his nurse, carried a tray of sleek and delicate silver surgical equipment that I would have thought more appropriate for a woman in labour undergoing a Caesarian.

I remember a final shrill laugh from myself, a pathetic attempt to tell mysef that this is going to be a walk in the park. I am fearless. I know no pain. I kept telling myself that.

I almost blacked out at what happened next. A scream caught in my throat as his wife injected a two-inch long syringe into what you people will call my lan jiao. It was the most painful sensation I have ever experienced in the whole of my life, now and then. It was the sharpest of pains into the most sensitive of areas. Later, I was told the injection was for painkilling purposes, to numb the nerves. Painkilling? You nearly killed me with pain!

Following that, came the cutting. With a scalpel, the skin of my kukubird was slowly and not so precisely sliced off. I watched in morbid horror and cursed the doctor for not tying the blindfold tighly enough and allowing me to watch as an unwilling spectator. Round and round the scalpel went, around the head of my penis. The skin peeled off like the leavings from a pencil sharpener as a pencil is rubbed against the razor. I watched as my raw flesh was uncovered and unwrapped. I was being skinned alive.

After it was done, I sat up, trembling. On a tray, were several long, thin shreds of skin that formerly house the head of my instrument. In between my legs was a raw piece of meat, oozing pus and dirty blood. I was too shocked for words. I was too shocked to even cry. I stared unblinkingly as the nurse gingerly picked up the tray with her gloved hands and disposed my scalped pieces of skin into a bin.

Ever since that day, my pain tolerance has been pretty high! Cheers mate. :)

Yes, I am merely highlighting the possible dangers our servicemen face. To reiterate, the Singapore contingent will be based alongside the NZDF PRT and will face the same threats. The previous year's rotation have obviously returned - but MINDEF has not released the date of departure and duration of deployment of the current teams. They might already be there, or they might be leaving soon. Anyone have any news? Anyway, our teams are rotated on a 3 month basis and that is usually half the time of what most servicemen from other countries serve.

I am encouraged by the fact that we are sending professionals to face operational risks, unlike a certain's country cavalier self-declared Christian missionaries last year.

Hey, I don't believe relationships are about money, and neither does my partner. When I first started dating my girlfriend, I spent around $3K on our first three months alone. After that I went to school, and went totally broke. I thought that would be the end of us. The cliched No Money, No Honey. Yet, she's still around and loves me just as much, probably much more now than in the past. In fact, the situation is reversed. I'll just like to point out a couple of likely scenarios if your average Singaporean male did not serve his National Service.

First example ; Pedra Branca will not be an issue. Why? Because we won't be having our RSN missile corvettes patrolling around that rock and our NDU guys hanging their legs and MP5s out of helicopters overhead to ensure that our right to national sovereignty is not threatened. We can face other foreigners in the eye and know that we are not a country of total wusses.

Secondly, imagine the cost of your PUB bill without the presence of an SAF. Malaysia would play havoc with the water rates. Maybe a ringgit per litre for all you care. Maybe lima puloh sen. Price of an essential good goes up, the rest of the market follows suit. Everything in your life, from buying a bowl of laksa, buying a packet of panadol, having a baby, rises up tremendously. Inflation occurs. Trade deficit tumbles. Economics, baby. Singapore is reduced to a third-world country, where you take a shit in a little hut with no flushing, and an ah pek comes around at 5am daily to dispose of the daily human waste of your kampong. Yeah, kampong. The government probably wouldn't be able to afford to build HDB flats for you. Don't talk about NEWater and desalination plants - we won't be able to afford those, either.

As was mentioned, Gandhi is the exception, not the rule. The Swiss were not invaded during World War 2 by Nazi Germany not because they marched up and down the Alps on hunger strikes, but because they had a dedicated and committed military that could stop German panzers in their tracks coupled with the serious terrain advantages. History has shown that emulating the Swiss model is a more reliable and efficient way of ensuring your survival.

There are very wide political, economic and social implications if we were to dump NS, and if you are not aware of them, then well, I would advise you to do take some time to ponder a little.

Oh, believe me, I know quite well about the unofficial policy of discrimination in the Singapore Armed Forces. An RSAF captain once shrugged his shoulders and explained to me the lack of personnel in sensitive vocations as "simply a matter of geography."

This matter deserves another thread altogether.

Have you ever wondered why SOME chinese feel that way towards SOME of the malays? It take two hands to clap. I'm not saying all malays are like that or all chinese are good, I'm just saying that there ARE malays who are racist (encountered before personally) and there ARE chinese who will be racist back to them. We live in a non-ideal world, and certain things like these cannot be changed cos if there's a fault, everyone is at fault, if there's no fault, everyone can say they are innocent.

So in other words, let people speak all they want. By telling them not to pass racist comments, they will tell you something like "also got some malays say racist thing to me leh".

So just let it be.

The attitude of "letting it be" smacks of sweeping things under the carpet. During WW2, the vast majority of 70 million odd Germans decided to close one eye towards the discrimination of the Jews and the Holocaust happened. While this is an extreme example, such historic precedents bode ill for us who live in a society whose fabric is not as strong as we might like.

I am crying foul for what saddeningly seems to be a small minority of Singaporeans who are sick of the poison that is racism. I do not care for the colour of your skin; you can be ah beng, mat, ah neh or serani, but I will condemn anyone who attacks your race with unjustified remarks.

The reality is that many of us are coloured by personal negative experiences, but the question is are you big enough to rise above petty defensiveness?

Racism is only one of the ugly social divisions that divide Singaporeans; on top of that Singaporeans are also slowly being split apart into classes based on education/background/income.

I acknowledge that the Malays here are relatively behind their Chinese and Indian counterparts in almost all areas - but statistics have shown as a community they are by and large catching up. However small the percentage, the university enrollment of Malays are increasing. Drug problems are nowhere near the catastrophe they were during the 1980s. The biggest issue facing the Malay community is the rise of social problems such as high divorce and abortion rates. You have to understand that the current generation is suffering from the failings of those beforehand - socio-economic problems are always a vicious cycle. Therefore, I find it admirable that the the lower echelons of the Malay community are at last making significant progress at breaking out of this cycle.

Such issues though, are not my main irritant in the postings of this topic.

What has social and economic problems got to do with racial harmony and tolerance?

If you're poor and uneducated, I still have a social responsibility, as a fellow human being, to show you respect. You don't spit at any man for no good reason, no matter if he is a millionaire or the unfortunate Chinese aunty who resorts to selling tissue paper at kopitiam for her earning.

The human tendency to moralize is forgivable. Even ignorance, to a certain extent, is pardonable. But the human urge to discriminate and sling mud at another group for being of a different colour cannot be tolerated for the sake of our humanity and basic decency.

I agree with the first point ; the Indonesian military is far from being a competent force. 10 Sukhois to cover their territory I daresay is less than sufficient. So what was he sentenced to? Community service. What form of community service? No, he doesn't have to strap on a vest and pick up litter. He's sentenced to writing articles for newspapers and giving lectures on business ethics. Oh yeah, on top of all that, he has "pledged" to donate a billion to charity.

So yeah, it's true - money can buy you out of jail.

edit - I have to add that the South Korean Courts' reasoning behind the "sentence" is that he is a critical figure of the South Korean economy, seeing how he is the head of Hyundai, the sixth-largest automaker globally. However, I fail to see how just one man, though he is the president, can cause such critical damage to such a powerful economy. Surely the support infrastructure isn't that weak?

Hopefully Durai's appeal doesn't get through and he has to serve time between bars.
