I do not think there will be a harsh punishment for you if you own up. I think the caning is for those who are caught in a sting operation and/or spot checks. I am sure the officer in charge will give you a chance to explain yourself and review your case. Just remember to bring your passport and valid documents along i.e. the disembarkation card and other documents.

I suggest you do not mention about your temporary work and staying arrangements to implicate people and yourself. I am sure you are not staying in a hotel as they will be sure to know that you have overstayed. Whatever, it is please do not delay as you are in a very precarious situation.

Thanks for that - just a case of getting things together to go there. Makes it better to know what you said about the caning being for if you get caught. Anything else isn't so bad.

      3. What was the reason for the overstay?

      4. Has there been any extension on the passport before?

      5. Is there a return air ticket to this person's country?

To have overstayed for 3 months is not a joking matter and for that matter may even jeopardize the person whom this foreigner is with (that is you at the moment) - harbouring an illegal. So you had better take some action and not hesitate any further.

To give you the info. 1. It is a UK passport. Male aged 24. 2. Visa was for one month - nearly 5 months over now. 3. Liked the country and started seeing a local girl but that's over now. 4. No extension to passport. 5. Not yet but will get one if it helps. Been working casually but employer thinks it's a differnt visa. I know the right thing to do is go to immigration but hearing about what could happen with jail and the cane is hard to think about.

have you talked to immigration already ? ... I think the more you drag, the worse it'll be for you ....

t realise how serious a problem it would be

    • I’m really worried now after reading this. I know this is a bad situation but would the cane be always a punishment for overstaying on a visa. Does it make a difference is if somebody is from Europe? I thought that the worse that could happen would maybe be held for a few days and then deported but I’m obviously wrong.

Do you think this law is fair?

    • Anybody know how people who are held for overstaying on a visa are treated in prison? Are they put in with other regular prisoners or are they kept seperately? What is it like in prison and is it very strict?

I hope it doesn’t happen but I’ve heard stories about things been bad but don’t know if they are true

    • Is that right about ‘a caning not less than 3 strokes’ – surely that’s the worse that can happen not the minimum? That seems very very harsh just for overstaying?

What I wanted to know if that you turned up to the airport with your flight booked and ready to go would you still have to deal with the immigration authorities or would they just let you go and maybe fine you?

    • What is likely to happen to someone who has overstayed on a social visit visa for 3 months? Does it make a difference if you go to immigration yourself and tell them? Would it be better to have a flight booked so they can see you are going to levae?

or maybe you should just keep quiet about this ... i mean, how is immigration is going to check, unless you're flagged internationally, like being a pedophile, which you're not ...

I think you'll get in fine ... Laughing

Second option seems good. Good to know there shouldn't be a problem.

What happens when you arrive? What checks do they do and what questions would they ask? Not sure what you mean by the 2 day thing?

    • I am looking at travelling abroad with my girlfriend over the next few months.

I know that UK passport holders don't need a visa for short stays but am just wondering if there would be any problem with getting entry as I have a criminal record in the UK. This has caused me problemsd going to other places but I don't see any mention of it on the visa site so just looking to see if anybody knows about that?
