    • Give me a trial or let me go NOW!

      Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today is the 40th day since my arrival in Singapore on May 26, 2008. I expected to remain in Singapore only until June 3rd, 2008 i.e. for only 9 days for a short holiday and to witness the Lee Kuan Yew vs Dr. Chee Soon Juan defamation case.

On May 29, 2008 I wrote a blog criticizing the judge in the case of Lee Kuan Yew vs Dr. Chee Soon Juan Juan which was heard from May 26, 2008 to May 28, 2008. My article critical of Judge Belinda Ang appeared in this blog.

On May 31, 2008 5 plain clothes policemen and women from Cantonment Police Station arrested me from my hotel, the Broadway Hotel at Serangoon Road at 9 pm.

The Singapore government in this case is being being deliberately malicious and small minded in wanting to hurt me unnecessarily by refusing to proceed with this case in an expeditious manner. It has now been already been 40 days since my arrival in Singapore and I still have not had a trial yet. The Singapore government very well knows that this sort of delay is especially hurting to a foreigner who is waiting here while his affairs in his home country are being neglected. This sort of delay causes untold misery to a foreigner, which itself amounts to severe punishment.

The Singapore government is being deliberately malicious in refusing to proceed with this case in an expeditious manner and is intentionally causing me severe harm by dragging this case on unnecessarily.

This Singapore government is aware that I have my personal business to attend to in the USA and I have to go on with my life, which happens to be in the USA. Not in Singapore. While here, I have no proper accommodation, no right to work or no means of survival. Yet knowing this, this heartless and unjust Singapore government deliberately drags their feet with this case instead of giving a a trial immediately or alternately dropping all charges and letting me go home.

Let me make this very clear. When I attended the 3 day case before Judge Belinda Ang, there was no doubt in my mind at all that she was clearly biased as biased can be, and completely and utterly unfair towards Dr. Chee Soo Juan. In court she was not presiding as a judge at all, but was being merely a spokesman or spokeswoman for Lee Kuan Yew and his son to ensure that they get to say whatever they want and at the same time to ensure that Dr. Chee was not given any effective means to put his case forward. It was not a trial, but a charade, a sham, an opera and a make believe of the most disgusting sort.

The Singapore government in their effort to use the law courts as a means to remain in power can do whatever they want. But they cannot try to make me say things which are not true. They cannot and will not succeed in making me lie. No matter what, they cannot compel me to say that what happened in the Singapore High Court was indeed a fair trial. It was not.

The police had seized my personal notebook containing my Email password and either themselves or through their agents sent Emails to this judge Ang and are now trying to blame it on me. I have not sent any emails to this judge Ang. I did post 2 blog posts about the matter. Sending emails by seizing my personal particulars to a judge and then trying to blame it on me shows the depths of desperation and dishonesty to which this pathetic government will go to prove their point. By lies and dishonesty.

Look here, Singapore government. There was no need for me to send any Emails to Judge Ang. I had made my position that this judge was biased and unjust very clearly in my blog. If she wanted to, she could read it. I couldn't care less. But there was no need for me to send her any Emails. I had already made my point that she was biased and unjust. Sending her any emails was totally unnecessary. So Singapore government, this is my message to you. Stop being infantile and stupid. Grow up. This is not how a first world country should behave.

I wish to make it clear that I am not going to permit this silly government intolerant of dissent to intentionally punish me by making me remain in Singapore unnecessarily. You may try such strong arm tactics with others but you will not try that with me. My having to remain in Singapore for an extended period is causing me very severe harm. The bad reputation that Singapore has throughout the world as a country which abuses the law for it's political ends is getting progressively worse by these false charges against me. In fact it is hitting rock bottom.

Therefore as from Monday, July 7th 2008, 9am, I will be holding a one man protest in front of Singapore Parliament demanding that I be given a trial immediately or I be allowed to go home. This Belinda Ang business has gone on long enough and I am not prepared to wait any longer. I intend to do this every day until I get a trial date or I am allowed to go home.

Also as from the said date, Monday July 7th, 2008 from 3 pm in the afternoon, I intend to hold a one man protest outside Takashimaya Shopping Center, Orchard Road for the same purpose. I am unable to continue financially being forced to remain in Singapore during this time. I will therefore willingly accept your financial donations to keep me alive in Singapore while I am being kept against my will.

I invite all bloggers, writers, concerned citizens, foreigners, people who cherish freedom, journalists, cameramen, citizens, video cameramen and everyone else to please come forward and give me your support during this difficult time.

Please also give as much publicity and coverage to this case as possible. The world must keep aware of the injustice that this Singapore government is meting out to free speech and expression.

I am going to force this government to give me a trial without any further delay. Give me a trial now or else drop your false charges and let me go home.

      Shame on you.

    • Transcript confirms Yeong's dishonesty

      Dear Madam Yeong,

The court transcript which you produced after being pressed has confirmed your dishonesty.

You wrote in your letter to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ): "Having lost [the case], Dr. Chee in open court then called the Singapore leaders 'murderers, robbers, child molesters' and 'rapists.'"

You cleverly omitted the phrase that I had said to Mr Davinder Singh: "...you might as well throw it in..." (see below). By doing so you hide the fact that I was referring to Mr Singh's wild conclusions, and that since he was making all these allegations, he might as well throw in these terms.

This is a far cry from me saying that the Lees committed murder, robbery, rape and had molested children.

Your letter was not even a case of taking my words out of context, it was a wholesale twist of imputing to me something I was not saying. It is childish, unbecoming and a gross lack of intellectual decency.

In the audio-recording there was laughter in the courtroom after I told Mr Singh that he might as well throw in murderers, robbers, child molesters and rapists. (See below) You again omitted this portion in your letter to the WSJ to make it look like I have gone off the deep-end to call the Lees these names.

I also wrote in my letter to the WSJ: “Mdm Yeong also says that 'Singapore upholds free speech.' Yes, and Mr Mugabe has just been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.” By the standard of your logic, you will no doubt say that I have claimed that the brutal Zimbabwean dictator is indeed a Nobel Peace Laureate.

Every time you make such wild claims, including your boss Mr Lee Kuan Yew calling me a psychopath, you degrade yourselves and the offices you hold.

On another matter, Mr Lee testified in court that the International Bar Association (IBA) president had sent a letter to the Law Society of Singapore (LSS) complimenting Singapore on its judiciary. The IBA denies sending the letter and the LSS confirms that it has not received such one.

Would you ask Mr Lee to produce the letter to refute the two organisations? This is important as it was part of the evidence that Mr Lee tendered in court under oath.

By the way you have still not answered why, as a civil servant, you are writing letters for the Minister Mentor when this is his personal matter and not a state one?

      Chee Soon Juan
      Secretary-General
      Singapore Democratic Party

Yeong Yoon Yin's letter to Today

Your report "Nothing to do with political freedom" (3 July 2008) refers to my letter to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and to Dr Chee Soon Juan's response published on his website.

In my letter to the WSJ, I said that in the recent defamation cases, Dr Chee had called Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew 'murderers, robbers, child molesters' and 'rapists' in open court.

Dr Chee alleged that I had lied, and challenged me to produce the relevant transcript.

I enclose p. 115 of the verbatim court reporting transcript of the hearing on28 May 2008. Line 11 onwards reads:

Mr Davinder Singh: " ... And to conclude on Dr Chee's submissions, he says that he doesn't wish Mr Lee Kuan Yew and Mr Lee Hsien Loong ill. In that same breath, he says he stands by The New Democrat article, which alleged that they are 'criminals, corrupt, and covered up matters in the NKF'. And under his breath he's now just said 'murderers and robbers'."

Dr Chee: "And rapists, too, you might as well throw it in, you know, right? Child molesters". [SDP: This was followed by laughter in the courtroom.]

Mr Singh: "And this is the man who says "I don't wish them ill".

Dr Chee has once again lied to Singaporeans.

      Yeoong Yoon Ying
      Press Secretary to Minister Mentor

(SDP:Today completely ignored Dr Chee's letter to the WSJ and only published Mdm Yeong's response.)

    • Singapore Democrats interview with activist Jaslyn Go
      03 July 2008

“I will not live by fear”: Activist, businesswoman, mother

What prompts a young mother of two to stand up for her rights and the rights of her fellow citizens in a country known for crushing dissent with frightening efficiency? This is a question that many Singaporeans will ask if they met Jaslyn Go Hui Leng.

This is because Ms Go is one of the 18 Singaporeans charged with taking part in an assembly and procession without a permit on 15 Mar this year.

That event launched the Tak Boleh Tahan! campaign which is aimed at highlighting the PAP Government’s raising of prices and fees that has thrown hundreds of thousands of Singaporeans into economic disarray and hardship.

And what will be her answer?

I will not live by the fear the PAP seeks to instill in its citizens,” explains Ms Go. “They can try to cripple me with arrest, jail or fine, but they can’t stop me from speaking up.

So what does the financial plight of workers have to do with a successful businesswoman who leads a more-than-comfortable lifestyle with her family?

I used to be very poor when I was young,” explained Ms Go, “now that I am better off, I hope I can do my part and highlight the plight our elderly and poor in Singapore are going through.

If we continue to allow the PAP to rule with an iron fist, the people’s problems will not be addressed and I fear that the younger generation will suffer more than we are now as the cost of living are skyrocketing and our jobs are being taken over by foreigners.

The Singapore Democrats first came to know Ms Go during the vigil outside the Burmese embassy in September 2007. Since then, the vivacious and determined advocate of democracy has been actively helping to promote human rights in Singapore.

Prior to the protest, I tried in my own ways to engage the government by writing to my MP, Tanjong Pagar GRC MPs, and the Straits Times. But time and again they refused to reply to me, or publish my letters,” she writes in her blog.

There is a steely quality about Ms Go that pushes her on. And it is not just starry-eyed ideals that propels the lady’s actions; she makes no bones that she is also doing this for the sake of her two children, aged 3 and 5.

Children in Singapore have been deprived of quality life which is so stressful even for young children, she points out.

Child suicide has been on the rise. The root of the problem lies in the stiff competition that our children are being put through in school,” says Ms Go. “I hope this can be a thing of the past.

Asked what she hopes for in the next 5 to 10 years, Ms Go replies that she would like to see elderly folks who have contributed to Singapore’s progress be taken care of by the government and not reduced to collecting cardboard boxes and empty drink cans to eke out a living.

And how does she think this can be achieved?

I hope to see a change in government to a more humane one that puts the country and the citizens first.

Ms Go will appear in Subordinate Court 23 together with the other 17 activists.

Many Singaporeans shy away from engaging in the public process by claiming that they have their families to think about. Such fear is a damning indictment of the PAP. Be that as it may, Ms Go’s example and courage should be a ringing call to citizens of this country to overcome their fearful inertia and become actively involved in matters that concern their everyday lives as well as their future.

Singaporeans can get involved by taking the first step next Friday, 11 Jul 08. Come down to the Subordinate Courts at 9 am to lend your support to this woman of incredible courage as well as to the other activists who have stood up for justice and democracy in Singapore.

If Singapore had more committed citizens like Ms Go, this country would be a much better place to live in.

The former Crown Prince of Nepal, Paras Shah, has left the country for the first time in more than two years on a flight to Singapore.

There has been speculation that the controversial former heir to the now abolished throne is moving to the island city permanently.

But this has been denied by one of his close relatives.

Abhinesh Shah told the BBC there was "no way" that Paras was moving out of the country.

Mr Shah, who is married to Paras' first cousin, said Paras was instead looking for a good school for his three young children, whose education was being disrupted by constant strikes and traffic problems in Nepal.

He said Paras and his wife, Himani, would - as guardians - be spending a lot of time in Singapore, but added that once the children got older they might return to good schools in Nepal.

Mr Shah said Singapore's good medical facilities would be useful to the 37-year-old former prince who recently suffered a heart attack.

The pony-tailed former prince was pictured arriving at the airport before flying out to Singapore, reportedly with two bodyguards and his brother-in-law.

      Controversial

The editor of Jana Astha, a weekly paper known for its royal stories, was quoted as saying Paras was concerned for the safety of his wife and three young children and was planning to leave Nepal for good.

But Mr Shah said he did not believe Paras was concerned for his family's security in Nepal.

There have however been press reports that the former princess is worried about that very issue.

As the son of ex-King Gyanendra, Paras was the first in line to the throne and was unpopular among Nepalis for his drunken antics and playboy lifestyle.

One observer here said that in travelling he was enjoying the advantages of being a commoner, which he became in May when a new assembly abolished the monarchy.

Like his father, his movements had been restricted for two years after the failure of a period of direct royal rule.

Mainstream media is dominated by the state.

It exists to praise PAP regime, defend PAP regime and spread state propaganda.

Criticism of PAP regime does not exist in mainstream media.

    • Breaking news: IBA says it did not send letter that LKY testified it did

Wednesday, 02 July 2008 Singapore Democrats

In the recent defamation suit hearing to assess damages, Mr Lee Kuan Yew testified in court that the President of the International Bar Association (IBA) had written to the Law Society of Singapore praising the judiciary here.

This letter was apparently written following the organisation's annual conference held in Singapore in September last year.

The following is what Mr Lee said in court:

"Your honour, the International Bar Association decided to honour Singapore and hold its annual conference in this city and you [Dr Chee] were given an opportunity to present your case, with your complaint that Singapore lack the rule of law. There were some 3000 lawyers there.

I think they left Singapore with a very different impression from what you have projected because we have a letter from the President of the International Bar Association to the organisers, namely the Law Society of Singapore, how successful the meeting was and how impressed they were by the standards they found to obtain in the judiciary - " (see here also)

But the IBA has confirmed to the SDP that there was no such letter. According to the IBA its president did not write such a letter. The Law Society of Singapore has also denied that it has received any such letter from the IBA.

An IBA official said: "If there is another source of this letter, we do not know about it."

Mr Lee gave this evidence in the witness box during cross-examination by Dr Chee Soon Juan on 27 May 08.

The SDP will seek legal advice on this latest development.

In a related matter, Mr Lee's press secretary wrote to the Wall Street Journal stating that Dr Chee had called Singapore leaders "murderers, robbers, child molesters" and "rapists" in open court.

Dr Chee clearly said no such thing and has written to the newspaper challenging the Minister Mentor to produce the records showing that he (Dr Chee) did. (See here).

    • That explains why sometimes you hear mediaco dj, dramas, praise the pap garbagemen.

      Praise PAP regime?

Local drama serials, especially chinese ones are propagandist in nature. They are sometimes designed to spread a certain type of propaganda to try to influence your thinking.

For example, the current one showing at 9 PM.

There was a scene where a young married couple made the decision to NOT to buy car but to take public transport in order to save money.

That is the same policy that PAP regime is pushing now to the public.

They are trying to influence you through this type of cheap propaganda.
