just for the sake of exam only
HALF a MILLION BUCKS for a 4 room public housing??!!! That's crazy!!! I feel sorry for you Melissa. What were you thinking? Considering you just started out, my guess is that you would have taken out the 30 years loan at least. Add on the compound interest, at the end of that 30 years loan period you would have paid a total ONE MILLION DOLLARS +/- a few thousands! Now ask yourself, can you sell your 4rm HDB flat 30 years from now at one million dollars just to break even? By then your apartment would be at least 35 years old and public flats have only a 99 years life or lease. The best thing you can do now is to sell off that car, it's a terrible waste of money. You should also consider renting out a room or 2 to cover that cash portion you are paying every month. Money can stress your married life to the breaking point. You can thank the PAP for that.
Secondary school teacher are all degree holder ... my niece with a general degree no honours or merit already got 3.2 K when she start work in a primary school after 1 year NIE training, her bf also teacher pay more than 5K after 4 years of work,, , GLC engineer pay around 2.5 K at least ... maybe TS 5 K pay is after deduction of CPF . so their combine pay gross is 7 K actually , so I think TS story quite true
If this story is true, this teacher deserve it... No money go buy 3 room flat in Jurong.. Less than 300K
Spend within yr limit..
half a million for 4 bedroom in that area
hmm no comments..
Whats so special about that place?
why never buy new flats which are a little cheaper? Why buy such an expensive flat? If cannot afford, why keep a car?
Why never think and calculate properly before buying the house AND ranting?
What are you complaining about not having the 8 course dinner? No wedding dinner means less money wasted and less hassle. Your husband should be very happy for it.
They already mentioned they want to stay near their parents.
If they go stay in new estate.. will gahmen still honor the grant.. no right ? Then how ? Ask the parents move house meh ?
How you know they don't use the car to chauffer their old parents around ?
They go stay in new estate.. their parents stay in mature estate.. then when baby comes... who help take care ???
Can a new couple in a new flat in ulu estate still survive on a single income ?
You all never think properly.. anyhow hantam.

I was thinking the same line...about her combine income after CPF......
The short term solution is to rent out a room or 2 to ease cash flow.
sell off the flat after the restriction is over so that they don't committed themselved to a life long loan payment. Moved to a smaller flat.

What exactly does "living within your means" mean ?
Young couples has so many odds stacked against them nowadays.
Depressed wages, higher cost of living, relentless influx of cheap competition.
Gahmen keeps telling you to live within your means, yet they do more to ensure you live a more depressed life.
Does living within your means simply means you give up the QUALITY of life one deserves.
Is that crazy or wat ?

So is the resale flat cheaper than the new flat with the grant? I'm quite sure the answer is no. Therefore the grant becomes a non-factor.
If they are really broke, then ferrying the parents around becomes a second priority which can be sacrificed. In any case, travelling by taxi is cheaper than driving even if you call a cab, unless you travel around Singapore approximately 7 times a day.
Help with baby can be arranged by various ways, including staying with parents for a period or depositing with parents.
Yes, a new couple with single income can survive in a new estate. even if it is just 2 or 3K.

Who doesn't want convenience ? We all do. Must we all live like beggars ?
What is the role of government in our life ? If they arn't doing jack, why are you still paying taxes for ?

Oh.. so no quality is best . Yes ?
You have no idea what quality of life is ? Where have you been living all these years ? Under a rock ?

Separate issues. We are scolding her for not managing finances and doing her sums beforehand.
If you want to talk about Singaporeans deserving better, you can continue but it does not in anyway ameliorate her failure to plan. By the way, are you even sure she is a singaporean?
Hmm..
This is what I have been talking all along.......that the high property cost, high cost of living, and long working hours, all contribute to the low marriage rate and low birthrate.
Just take a look at the experience of this lady. This is exactly the same experience faced by hundreds of thousands of other young people.
This is why the birthrate and marriage rate are low.
In order to solve the low birthrate and marriage rate, and as a matter of fact, in order to make people more holistic, happy, and have a true, real, high standards of living, there needs to be a total rethink.
People cannot be taken as robots or cows.
There must be some changes and new paradigms. The current system is broken.
There must be conscious and deliberate effort to make life more family friendly.
First, there must be strict enforcement of maximum working hours per week.
Second, there must be a complete overhaul of the housing system. The status quo will not do. Housing supply and regulation must be tailored in a way which encourage and promote family creation.
Third, CPF must be completely re-evaluated. Right now with the current system, there are some people who use up CPF to buy homes. Again, what is the purpose of this government mandated and state managed savings and pension system, and why is it connected to the housing which are also managed by the state? Looks like people must live their lifes to become cashcows and forever trapped to serve the state, in all the stages of their lifes.
Singapore's leadership and smart political and bureacracy elite class, have completely dropped the ball.
This is a rot, a serious problem which plague the society, for a long time already.
There are many other Mellissas out there, facing difficulties.
I dont think the leadership ever taken a serious comprehensive outlook to evaluate this problem.
The biggest stupidity they ever came up with, is by giving several thousand dollars as "baby bonus" to tackle this issue.
How can several thousands dollars cash payment do anything?
Can several thousand dollars make Melissa's working hours shorter? Can it be sufficient to even do anything meaningful to their housing payment? Can it do anything?
People are suffering. It is an illusion that Singapore is a "first world developped country" with best port, best airport, high GDP numbers, etc, but in reality, there are many poor people, there is a growing rich-poor divide (one of the worlds worst Gini coefficient), and 85% of population live in small chicken coops, forever paying monthly payment to the state and working ever longer working hours.
The current system will not do.

I agree.. But this melissa teacher is a very bad example to illustrate such point.
as long as Singaporeans keep thinking they don't deserved to be treated like human beings.
the ruling party will forever treat us like sheeps.
