Well, from what I have been taught, it is fine to answer with "I'm fine."Originally posted by TooFree:Hi ozzy, I need clarification...
I happened to read an article stating that it is wrong to answer 'I'm fine' when someone asked 'How are you?' .. Funny thing is, I often heard it being used in people's conversation or TV drama saying the same thing...
Now, how true is this?
Okay, so the teachers basically aim to get you through the examination, but that's all? They don't teach much commom knowledge? Like how to pronounce ans spell things correctly...and the proper grammar to use in speech? I find that very strange.I thought all schooling systems were supposed to teach even the basics in proper grammar and the such.Although I suppose with Singapore not being an original english country...even though english is the first language taught...it would be a very hard task to teach two or maybe even more languages! I think even though the full english language is not taught properly there,it is great that the Singaporean government try's to teach everyone as much as they can.Originally posted by Kuali Baba:It's mostly geared towards tackling the examination questions, which consist mainly of...
Comprehension (passages and questions that follow),
Essay writing,
Oral examinations (one reads a passage out loud, then describes a photo and discusses a topic to the teacher)
and a veriety of fill-in-the-blanks questions in primary school. So in class there are spelling tests, lessons on idioms, exercises on conjunctions, essay-writing practice and so on.
Yep. Cool.Originally posted by ozzy-gurl:Well, from what I have been taught, it is fine to answer with "I'm fine."
ASLONG AS you follow it up with "THANKYOU".
So, "I'm fine thankyou." "I'm fine thanks." They are both fine to use,it is better to say thankyou afterwards, because sometimes the person you are talking to might conceive "I'm fine" as that you are in a bad mood,or you are cranky with them, and you are limiting your talking to them to what you have to,just to be nice. So I always try to say thankyou after I answer someones greet, because it sounds much more polite than keeping it short, and it also invited the other person to keep the conversation going
Hope I helped

Yeah I've heard that one a lot from the young Singaporean guys I know, aswell as a few other ones like:"Have you taken your food yet?"Originally posted by Kuali Baba:The basics are taught at an early stage, but lessons aren't entirely devoted to them. The sentences the young ones use are pretty simple...as they grow up more sophistication is expected and the nitty-gritty is de-emphasised.
A common mistake made by Singaporeans when they get to know one another better is asking "where do you stay" when they mean to ask "where do you live".

oOo.. oriteyOriginally posted by ozzy-gurl:well actually,no it shouldn't be!
when you say."my family is well also." it means you only have one family member.
so when you say,"my family are well also",it means that youa re saying that your whole family is well.
like if you were to talk about your parents.(or anyone really)
you wouldn't say, "my parents is coming to see me."
you would say."my parents are coming to see me."
get it now?
