Really? If you look at the political and cultural landscape and context at that time, you will realise that it is not all that simple.
Don't forget that the Catholic Church also preserved and protected the Bible through the ages against all manner of threats, defended Church teachings against many heresies and provided food, shelter, education and medical care for countless abandoned people.
