Having said that, it is erroneous to assume that only Buddhists are adopting such a stance when idol worshipping is concerned. Hindus, Buddhsists, Christians in one or or another do that. This form of worshipping is actually telling oneself that one is not ''good'' enough.
It is cos ''sick'' human beings created ''god' in their own (man''s) image and hence the choas , the divisiveness, the prejudices and the bigotry!
The irony of it is Jesus never uttered he was Christian. Buddha never did about Buddhism and nor did Mohd about Islam.
Perhaps modern man has confused spirituality and religion. The essential is always spiritual and the accidental is always religion. Relgion is temporal and a reaction to ... (cos of beleifs, traditions ... which is acquired from or accepted from someone esle/book or ...) and spirituality is that which is eternal, existential and herenow. The form resonates with the masses cos it has the element of certainty! The latter cannot be be made certain and uncertainty is something the human mind cannot accept or reconcile to.
PS - As long as there is no synthesis of the essential and the accidental one is doomed and however or whichever way one may try it is probably going to split one on the inside.

Last time, if not for Tripitaka and his journey to India to bring back the scriptures and translate them into chinese, China would've become a state with no religion.
People would be praying to Guan Yu and Lu Bu, but do you think Guan Yu and Lu Bu would pray to an Indian ah bu neh neh Buddha?
Anyway people are confuse easily, when they want to join gangs and fight for their women, they will pray to Guan Yu and Lu Bu. Then after they got their women and they want to retire, they will pray to Buddha for peace and wisdom.
But I know before they all die, they will be trying their best to convert into Christianity.
Why? Because they all know that Christianity is the one TRUE RELIGION.
No need to shave your heads, can still enjoy KFC and Bacon, no need to cry on TV or walk on tight rope between buildings.
And most importantly, can eat REAL FOOD....not those man-made vegetarian meat like a hypocrite.
