The son of a professional rugby league player, Hughes was born in Barrow-in-Furness, in 1947. He began his playing career at Blackpool but was signed by Bill Shankly for Liverpool in 1967, playing 657 games during 12 years at Anfield. He also made 62 appearances for his country - 23 as captain - his last coming in 1980.
Labelled Crazy Horse because of the way he charged around the field, Hughes won two European Cups, five championships, an FA Cup, and a Footballer of the Year award, and never missed a day's training during his illustrious career.
A LFC spokesman added: "Those lucky enough to see him play will recall his boundless enthusiasm, 100% commitment to the cause and unrelenting passion for the club whenever he had the Liver Bird close to his chest."
*********** Any thots abt tis legend?
Curious if any of us here started supporting LFC during his era?
I started in early 80s...when Villa pipped Ipswich for the title on the very last day
Tis Crazy Horse must've been some character...having served his club and country well. Anyway, whether we've heard/known him b4...any Reds with the LiverBird close to his heart deserves our salutation!

Rafael Benitez is calling on his Liverpool players to try to emulate the achievements of Anfield legend Emlyn Hughes.
The club will hold a minute's silence ahead of the Carling Cup game against Middlesbrough following the death of the former England captain.
It is bound to be an emotional night as the Kop remembers one of its favourite sons - the man who led them to back-back European Cup victories.
Spanish coach Benitez said: "He was part of the best ever Liverpool sides and won a lot of trophies.
"It is important all the players look at a legend like this and hopefully he can inspire them.
"It would be marvellous if they could mirror his achievements."
