In the past, only the champions of domestic leagues (and defending champions) were entitled to play in the UEFA Champions League (which was why it was named 'Champions' League). what's the point of having strong teams like MU or pool playing these matches as eventually they still advance to group stage and become seeded teams?
actually they should made the champions of each league seeds instead. -

AFAIK, I am not aware that Uefa Cup holders can't defend their title automatically. It makes no sense that Everton and Inter Milan should be allowed in the UCL at all, while Rangers and Brugge can't even start in the group stages despite winning their respective leagues.
By the way, the Turkish champs Fenerbahce will start in the Group stage with Liverpool's inclusion in the 1st qualifying round. -
For pple who say the CPL should be Champions only dun forget how liverpool get into into Competion in the first place.
Liverpool actually benefit most from the explanded format.
of the so called G14, they're the only one who have not won their league for the last 10 years and cannot even finished in the top 2 consistiently..
Lucky got their buddies in the G14, if not they dun even get a whiff of CPL action.
The fact that No teams have won back to back CPL is not suprising .
In a league Format , the bigger the competion the less luck plays a part ,
In a Cup format the reverse is true, the bigger the competiton the more Luck plays a part. -

liverpool most supported club?i dun tink so la.they are not even in the top 5th biggest money earners.if they are truly the most supported surely they should be richer.i think man u is still the world most supported club.although i duno how many of them are actualy true fans but rather just following the strong team in the past decade.i see a similar trend happening to chelsea now.tmd so sickening when i see those fans who switch loyalty anyhow.

Rules are rules... no matter how dramatic they win the title, they still have to sweat for the place in EPL.
I know the amount of money gain in CL is too great to say no but then again what if WHAT IF, Liverpool failed to reach the final this time? Defending of the title will look meaningless isnt it? -
I agreed that with Liverpool's performance in EPL this season, Liverpool does not deserve to be in Champion League.
But, dear Liverpool fan, please look at the matter in another angle.
If Liverpool does not qualify for CL next season, Ah Ben would have difficulties in convincing the Liverpool Board to pay and the players to play for Liverpool.
Especially for the Drama Mama Captain who will ONLY play in Champion League. (I hope he leaves as he is acting like Raul in RM)
Ah Ben would need more money to buy players to challenge for the EPL title.
With so much congestion ahead (CL match, League Cup, FA Cup, Super Cup and EPL), Liverpool REALLY need more players and depth to rotate the players.
So far, Ah Ben have not KICK any ASS or secured any players and HE is running out of time for training on the next CL match.
The scene is not pretty for Liverpool now. -
Even Brazil was made to qualify for World Cup 2006 after they won it in 2002. UEFA's decision is definitely a big step backwards.

To those Liverpudlians, you already managed to bend and break the rules with regard to UCL. There is no need to go another step further and ask for automatic qualification to the group stage. Just grab this god-given chance and try to qaulify.
oh yah, by virtue of being the most supported club (this is not a fact but merely an assertion by one forumite) does not grant you the automatic right to anything. This is the kind of mentality that I find most offensive especially in Americans. -

Winning UCL is only a baby-step under the new management.
All I ask is for us to appreciate the chance given by UEFA and don't think that it's our god-given right to defend the title. Some of us are getting too big-headed for our own good. -

I may've tried too hard 2 explain things 2 u....apparently I'm not very good at tat. It's a only a personal belief tat a d/champs shd always defend the title....and I'm glad tat many others including UEFA have taken the same stand!
So yes, it's not god-given....but it'll be a total sham if NOT given! There's no need 2b so timid abt stating tis! As I've said, it's juz common sense! Whether we shd be appreciative abt it is another debate altogether....for tat, I passed.

I'm very concerned that some of us are acting like Man Utd fans when they won the treble in 1999, looking down on other teams and act big.
The image of Liverpool fans have to be maintained, that's all I ask.
