That's right and which is why Brazil is now in the South American qualifying group stages. France was the last world champions given the automatic right to defend.Originally posted by stellazio:i believe world cup also change rules liao.holders haf to go through qualifying phrase.the uefa cup too.holders don't seem to gain automatic entry.
In the past, only the champions of domestic leagues (and defending champions) were entitled to play in the UEFA Champions League (which was why it was named 'Champions' League). The G14 group of clubs began asserting pressure and UEFA gave in to expand the UCL to include runners-up of domestic league, and slowly second runners-up and now third runners-up as well....Originally posted by 798:why not next time have only champions of the league playing for UCL?
but qualifying games are waste of time, because all the opponents are really weak in my opinion.Originally posted by F.raon.I.R:none any better....pool will have to play 6 stupid qualifying matches then can go into the actual group phase....haha...
dun think it will be easy....those wuluu teams in europe will give pool a ran for their $$!
What if the fourth place had gone to Bolton instead? Would Liverpool have taken the Trotters' place in the UCL?Originally posted by chong-ster:At least the panel didnt allow Liverpool in at the expense of Everton. They did very well and deserve their place. I can imagine chaos in Merseyside if that happens...
AFAIK, I am not aware that Uefa Cup holders can't defend their title automatically. It is just that many Uefa Cup holders also qualified for the UCL in the same season that they won the Uefa Cup.Originally posted by stellazio:i believe world cup also change rules liao.holders haf to go through qualifying phrase.the uefa cup too.holders don't seem to gain automatic entry.
Many of the weak teams are league champions in the lower-ranked nations. Going by your logic, Rangers should be seeded since they are the Scottish champs.Originally posted by 798:but qualifying games are waste of time, because all the opponents are really weak in my opinion.
what's the point of having strong teams like MU or pool playing these matches as eventually they still advance to group stage and become seeded teams?
actually they should made the champions of each league seeds instead.
We are Liverpool FC , we are the world's most supported football club , how can Liverpool not in UCL ?Originally posted by RaTtY81:so?

Here we are talking about Champion's not allowed to defend the title they won .
Decision is fair & square . A brilliant gesture of give & take .
they finish fifth of epl. most supported club so wat? most supp means mus b in ucl? well in this thread we can see the attitude of some of lfc supporters...Originally posted by Poolman:We are Liverpool FC , we are the world's most supported football club , how can Liverpool not in UCL ?

There is a fair share of man utd haters , trust me on that.Originally posted by stellazio:liverpool most supported club?i dun tink so la.they are not even in the top 5th biggest money earners.if they are truly the most supported surely they should be richer.i think man u is still the world most supported club.although i duno how many of them are actualy true fans but rather just following the strong team in the past decade.i see a similar trend happening to chelsea now.tmd so sickening when i see those fans who switch loyalty anyhow.
Being a Liverpool fan.... I still have to agree with the bear.Originally posted by the Bear:champs or not, the rules were clear... i still think LFC did not deserve the place..

Obviously u still dun get it. Such ambiguity need not exist in the 1st place. Put it tis way, let's say no rules hv been set yet....n u got 2 choose between the defending champs and the best-finisher in the league for the final spot in UCL - who is the obvious choice!? or rather....is there a need 2 choose at all!? So I glad common sense is finally in place!Originally posted by F Takumi:The UEFA did not amend the rules as they expected the local FA to make the decision of choosing between the league 4th finisher and UCL champion to participate in the next UCL.
Originally posted by JLennon:To those Liverpudlians, you already managed to bend and break the rules with regard to UCL. There is no need to go another step further and ask for automatic qualification to the group stage. Just grab this god-given chance and try to qaulify.
it cld juz be a tongue-in-cheek comment....coz we all noe it's not factually proven!
oh yah, by virtue of being the most supported club (this is not a fact but merely an assertion by one forumite) does not grant you the automatic right to anything. This is the kind of mentality that I find most offensive especially in Americans.
Humble as u may sound, I'm saddened tat u've started name-calling oreadyOriginally posted by F Takumi:Winning UCL is only a baby-step under the new management.
All I ask is for us to appreciate the chance given by UEFA and don't think that it's our god-given right to defend the title. Some of us are getting too big-headed for our own good.
I'm not trying to argue with you on whether Liverpool deserves to qualify for the next UCL.Originally posted by Redz:Humble as u may sound, I'm saddened tat u've started name-calling oready
I may've tried too hard 2 explain things 2 u....apparently I'm not very good at tat. It's a only a personal belief tat a d/champs shd always defend the title....and I'm glad tat many others including UEFA have taken the same stand!
So yes, it's not god-given....but it'll be a total sham if NOT given! There's no need 2b so timid abt stating tis! As I've said, it's juz common sense! Whether we shd be appreciative abt it is another debate altogether....for tat, I passed.
UEFA had also apologised for their "mistake"....so let's move on!
