Brazil's case is different. FIFA changed the regulation after the last world cup to compel the defending champions to play the qualifiers. Uefa implemented similar rules, but only for national teams. i guess UEFA did not expect a championship winning team to play so badly that they cant even manage a 4th place.
liverpool created two records - qualifying as a 4th place team but won the championship and winning the championship but cant qualify as a 4th place team.
i seriously doubt man u, arsenal nor chelsea will finish 5th, at least not in the next few years. EPL only has 3 serious title contenders and they are the three. -

I think i ever heard from the UEFA Chief ever said this : " If The Champion can't defend the Title , it's a degrade for the European Cup .
I can't agree more .
It's not compulsory or entitlement that Liverpool has to be in , let's take this a special , unprecedented privilege from the Committee ( hmm hmm . for the mistake so many of them made ! ) . -
i think i will want to clarify the Brazil situation. Brazil are the world cup champions and by playing in the qualifers, they are defending the world cup! Just like Liverpool is defending the Champions league by playing in the first round. If Pool were to gain entry into the group stages then its like Brazil qualifying for the finals direct.

It's an analogy that seems logical but is actually wrong. All nations, including minnows like Singapore, get to play in the qualifiers. The UEFA Champions League is an exclusive event with pre-selected clubs, not all European clubs are eligible to play in the UCL qualifiers. Seems logical too, but looking from another perspective, if Brazil fails to qualify for the WC finals, then they are not good enough for finals, at least they were in the competiton to defend it, but if liverpool were not allowed to even join in the 1st round qualifers then their right to play in the UCL were decided by another competition that is totally of a different format. The whole mess wouldn't have come about if Milan had won the UCL. I hope Liverpool survive until the third round, then get beaten and instead, have to contend with a Uefa Cup campaign.

can't blame milan la.but den again its their fault for not winning.but u also haf to reserve praise and i mean lots of praise for liverpool.well dun curse liverpool now. just wish them the best since they are in the qualifiers now and if they are to be beaten or win the ucl again.lo and behold its onli destiny,fate and LUCK.

World Cup is once in 4 yrs...enuff time for a team to actually drop in standards dramatically. Look at France...winner in 98.....KO in first round in 2002. Dat's why FIFA change the rules so that only the best teams at that time will play. CL is played every yr..not much changes can be expected in between seasons. I mean there could be drastic changes to a defending champion...but dats very unlikely to happen very often. So, the high standard of winning needed by the defending champion should still be there. I mean as champions every team would like to beat them. Its no use becoming a champion if the previous winner is not ard. -
