Liverpool to wrap up deal for Real Madrid ace Figo
Liverpool could complete the signing of Real Madrid star Luis Figo this week.
Negotiations over a pay-out from the final year of Figo's contract are being held with Real officials this weekend.
The Daily Post says the Bernabeu club are now understood to have agreed to waive the £2million transfer fee that they had initially wanted which sacred off Liverpool.
Now his representatives were hoping to secure the former world player of the year's move to Merseyside by agreeing a settlement fee with the Spanish giants for the final year of the midfielder's contract.
Liverpool, who publically at least had feared that the move was dead earlier in the week, were last night buoyed by the news that Figo could become part of Rafael Benitez's squad. -

Figo has already made up his mind long ago to come to Liverpool. It's Real Madrid who is stalling the move. They can have Nunez back if they want. Free! Anyway, I think RM has relented and the move should happen within the next few days.

Peppino Tirri, the FIFA agent that is acting as mediator between European giants Inter and Real Madrid, confirmed to Goal.com that both Samuel and Figo will join the Nerazzurri by the end of the week.
“I heard about a return of Ronaldo to Inter, with Adriano going to Real. This news makes me laugh. The only names coming out of the talks between Inter and Real are those of Figo and Samuel,” said Tirri.
The FIFA agent also provided the time-span he believes it will take for all matters to be done and dusted.
“The talks are very advanced. By Tuesday or Wednesday both players will vest the Inter jersey. Real were holding back because they were looking for replacements. But Samuel and Figo will soon be Inter’s,” he explained.
Figo is expected to join the Nerazzurri on a two-year contract worth around 3.5/4 million Euros per season.
Argentine defender Samuel is instead expected to arrive at MorattiÂ’s court on a one-year loan. -

Rafa Benitez has named a strong 18-man Liverpool squad for their game against TNS, but Milan Baros will again miss out after being an unused substitute at Anfield.
The Reds are 3-0 up from the first leg of their UEFA Champions League qualifier, but the Spaniard is still taking the second leg at Wrexham seriously.
Benitez has made just one change to the first leg squad, with Luis Garcia replacing Baros - which could again put his future in doubt.
Baros scored in Liverpool's 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday but missed out on the first leg at Anfield after being named as a substitute, amid rumours that his future was in the balance.
Again not figuring in the Champions League will see his future called into question, as some believe that Benitez does not want him cup-tied for Europe as he may still decide to sell him this summer.
Benitez has warned his strikers that they must start firing, as they struggled for goals last season through a mixture of injuries and loss of form.
"Last season our top goalscorers scored 13 goals and that isn't enough," Benitez told the club website.
"The strikers always need to score more than 13 goals but I am confident that if we have better possession of the ball this season and play better football then they will have more chances.
"We had a lot of problems last season with injuries to strikers but I am sure it will be different this year."
Djibril Cisse is likely to start after looking sharp in pre-season, while Scott Carson could get a run-out in goal after Jerzy Dudek was again left out - but Benitez promises he is not taking the result for granted.
"We will use a strong team against TNS," added Benitez.
"It might not be the strongest team we could select, but it will still be a strong side.
"We must be careful in the game. Even though we're three goals up we want to name a strong side because we don't want any surprises on the night.
"We must do the right job and we must approach it in a serious frame of mind."
The Liverpool squad have flown from their training camp in Switzerland just for the game in Wrexham and will return on Wednesday.
Stephen Warnock injured his elbow during the Leverkusen game but is fit enough to be included in the squad.

Inter 'not optimistic' over Figo deal
Inter Milan are 'not optimistic' about their chances of signing Liverpool target Luis Figo.
The Italian club's president Massimo Moratti revealed he is not close to finalising a move for either Figo or the Portuguese star's Real Madrid team-mate Walter Samuel.
'We will try to do something in the next few days,' said Moratti. 'We will see in what direction this takes us, but nothing is free.
'Thus, we are not optimistic when it comes to the financial side of the deal but from the sporting side, we are.
'We are willing to try to do it.'
Samuel, who joined Madrid from Roma last summer, has failed to make much of an impact at the Bernabeu, while midfielder Figo, under contract for another season with the Spanish giants, is looking to secure more first-team football.
Liverpool have held talks with Figo but are unwilling to pay a transfer fee for the 32-year-old. -

Figo hopes to remain at Real Madrid
BEIJING, July 23 (Reuters) - Real Madrid's Luis Figo pledged on Saturday to see out his contract at the Spanish club even though he acknowledged he was no longer an automatic choice.
The unsettled Portuguese winger has one year left on his current deal and has been linked with a move.
Figo came off the bench to score the winner from the penalty spot in Real's 3-2 pre-season win over China's Beijing Guo'an before making it clear he wants to stay at the club.
'This is a complicated situation...it's difficult for a player,' he told reporters. 'I know I'm not the coach's first or even second choice in my position. But I want to see out my contract. I will do all I can for my club.'
England striker Michael Owen played wide on the right for Real in the first half before Figo's arrival in the second half.
Figo, a former world player of the year, had been a pre-season target for European champions Liverpool until Real coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo warned players unhappy about his selection policies that they should leave.
Figo's penalty gave Real Madrid a hard-fought 3-2 win in the third match of their lucrative pre-season tour on Saturday.
England captain David Beckham did not play because of a hamstring injury sustained in the United States last week and Real began sluggishly in rain-soaked Beijing.
'The pitch was very difficult to play on tonight because it was so wet,' Real coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo told reporters. 'It was hard to play to our real level. If the rain hadn't been so heavy the result might have been different.'
Real, who twice trailed on a water-logged pitch, were given a wake-up call when a Lu Jiang header gave the Chinese side a shock lead after 32 minutes.
The Spanish club struck back five minutes later through captain Raul, who dribbled past two defenders before applying a clinical finish.
Serbian forward Branko Jelic restored the home team's lead with a solo effort in the 73rd minute, only for Guti to equalise from close range with just over 10 minutes left.
Substitute Figo, who has been linked with a move away from Madrid, secured victory for the visitors from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute.
The 70,000-capacity Beijing Workers' Stadium was only just over half full for the match despite the enormous hype surrounding Real's visit.
Real began their six-match pre-season tour with a 3-1 win over Mexico's Chivas Guadalajara in Chicago and a 2-0 victory against the Los Angeles Galaxy in California.
The Spanish giants play two games in Japan next week before finishing the money-spinning trip with a friendly in Bangkok.

Rafa won't rule out Figo arrival
Rafael Benitez has refused to rule out the prospect of Luis Figo completing a free transfer from Real Madrid while insisting that £7million-rated Milan Baros was in his squad for the Champions League qualifier against the Lithuanian champions.
Liverpool are believed to have turned down a £5million bid from Aston Villa for Baros, insisting the offer is way short of their valuation for the Czech star.
And, although playing Baros in a European game would not only cup tie him in UEFA competitions but also instantly reduce his valuation, Liverpool boss Benitez claimed he will consider playing the striker in the game against Kaunas.
Benitez was cagey when both players were discussed, with Baros being a target not only of Villa but West Ham and Deportivo La Coruna.
Only the Spanish side are involved in Europe, Deportivo are in the Intertoto Cup and face Newcastle next week in the semi-finals.
A decision on their interest could be delayed until they know whether they are in the UEFA Cup or not.
Baros' advisors are planning talks with Benitez about the player's future but it is unlikely that any move is imminent.
Figo is returning from pre-season games in China with Madrid, having indicated that he would not be joining Inter Milan and was happy to see out the final season of his contract with Real.
As far as Liverpool are concerned, the sticking point is believed to be the Portuguese star's wage demands.
He is on £80,000 a week at the Bernabeu and wants more than the £65,000 Liverpool are prepared to offer.
Twice asked if would he like him to come to Anfield, Benitez replied : 'He's a good player.'
And, given the opportunity to deny his interest, the Liverpool manager pointedly declined to answer.
On Baros, Benitez refused to rule the striker out of the game having declined to play him in both TNS matches in the last round.
He said: 'Milan is in the squad and he can play against Kaunas, it is a possibility. He is our player, we will see what the possibilities are, we will see tomorrow.'
Benitez has injury doubts over Steve Finnan and Djimi Traore, but would not give any indication of Baros' involvement.
Baros has scored five goals in pre-season friendlies, two in the 4-3 defeat of Olympiacos on Saturday.
And the Spanish coach said: 'As far as I am concerned he is in my squad. I will see tomorrow if he plays or not.
'He is here, in the squad and can play. He is happy and training well, he is playing and scoring goals, of course he is happy.' -

We still need a right midfield and a back-up centre back.....maybe move Zenden to the right, Traore will be the back-up centre back. Riise will be the left back and that Mark Gonzalez will operate down that left flank.... -
