liverpool is expected to win, even at 1-3 down. luton has been out of sorts recently in the league championship.

How can they allow Luton to whack in 3 goals past Carson ?
well the 2nd & 3rd Luton goal can't be helped... a penalty and a superb on the run and shot goal.... that even carra can't pre-empt..... -
Liverpool nearly lost through tired defenders and leaky midfielder.
Hyypia and Carragher were visually tired and unable to handle the swift attack adopted by Luton.
They also tried to play the off-side trap too much.
Sissoko was not in sync with the midfield as he keep losing possession.
Alonso was sleeping during the 1st half and was finally after scoring the 3rd goal.
Ah Ben was fortunate that Sinama is on form last night.
Both the strikers was having a off day last night.
It was a patchy performance drumed up by Liverpool during the 1st half and Stevie was not even excited after logging in the 1st goal.
I believe they have underestimated their opposition and were lucky that they have retained their composure and come back during the 2nd half.
Imagine if you have bought a Luton win and the scoreline at halftime would be very interesting. -

that is exactly the point. to last the whole season in EPL all teams need to have strong reserves too.

i don't understand why ah ben did not rest his players..thats the reason why they let in 3 goals..had it been fresh faces i'm sure the most they concede is 1 or 2 nia..

Finally woke up. Match not good for the heart. Must rest today.
Comments:
Central defence really getting tired. Instable offside trap. Riise put the Luton player on for the first goal. Carra too tired to track the player for the second goal. Normally, he could have prevented that. Pitch is also a problem. Third Luton goal, oh thank you, Hyypia, I was saying to myself. Daniel Agger better come quick and fit in quickly. All other Premier League clubs are ready to attack Liverpool after this.
Disappointing players: Sissoko and Crouch. Sissoko looked, again, totally lost at centre midfield. Cannot get a tackle right, couldn't get hold of the loose balls and just let Luton players run around him in circles. Taking him was a good move and a masterstroke.
Crouch, for all his height, couldn't even get to head the ball at all. I wonder, can he jump? Or is he too lazy to jump?
Dun be surprised if he goes on another 18-game barren streak.
My MotM: Xabi Alonso. Okay, he didn't do well in the first half but I think he, ironically, stabilised the midfield after Sissoko went off. I was thinking he don't know how to work with Sissoko and hence all that confusion. Liverpool only had that 1 shot on target on the first half. Clearly, that centre midfield pairing doesn't work.
His passes in the second half were brillant, full of awareness and intelligent play. His goals were awesome, opportunistic and impressive.
Good job Liverpool for never admitting defeat. Stamina, grit, determination and quality won in the end.
Onwards to Round 4!

Woohoo....a classic game tat will go down in history. Lucky we are on the winning side!

Another game of 2 halves. 1st half was 1/2-hearted esp. after the 1st curler goal by Stevie. We relaxed and let them played....and boy, did they play well!? Kudos to Luton!
2nd half saw a more desperate Reds but things got fm bad to worse - missed a penalty and conceded 1 at the other end!
But I guess our "class" and pride steered us to a greater height! Pongolle looks more lively and effective than Cisse....I think it's time Pongolle gets his start after this good performance.
Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable game with fast-paced actions and lots of goals - good goals somemore!
Well done Reds....we've got characters man!

Their fowards exploited the space between our CB and FB and made a lot of diagonal runs to confuse our defence. That seems to be a major weakness in our defence.
Eg. X is the Luton striker

And when they attack in numbers, Finnan moves forward to engage their winger. X makes a diagonal run and moves into the space left behind by Finnan. Sami will have no choice but to follow. Sami does not have the pace to handle pacy strikers. That is the point when our defence is most vulnerable.

We usually rely on our offside trap to prevent situations like this. Finnan, Sami and Carra usually employ the offside trap well (evident from the replays).
Riise/ Traore are poor in positioning and are frequently too slow to stay in line.
The same situations arose when we play Chelsea at Anfield and against Bolton.
Solution:
1 CB with pace
+ 1 new LB who has better positioning.

For 60 mins luton were the better side by a mile. they just crumpled after simama scored, what a shame!!!! tot pool will get another early cup exit

I watched the replay.
Luton looks like a Premiership team Their second goal was a beauty. Turn the defender and shoot....
Cisse's confident must be low or he lacks match exposure? Dudek should be packing and leaving Anfield now that even Carson gets a start before him. What a pity for what he had done in the Champion's League and was shown the door so soon.
Alonso's last goal was so cheeky and accurate. I believe we will see Alonso reaching his very best soon. -
It will be most exciting when the Reds face Spurs at Anfield next sat.
Spurs is on the rise and may sneak a draw against Liverpool. -
spurs seems to do badly in cup competitions.

But strangely I was quite calm even when down at 1-3. The comeback can only be seen as positive...it means we've a good team spirit and pride, and can perform at the level we desire when it matters - this has happened time n again already. -
Last season we rested a bit of players on the bench , and got whacked by Burnley at Turf Moor .
