Surprised Defoe bid rejected by Spurs .

Liverpool have failed with a late attempt to sign Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermaine Defoe.
Both Manchester United and ourselves made late offers for the player but all approaches were rebuffed by Spurs boss Martin Jol.
Defoe favoured a switch to Anfield despite interest from Old Trafford.
A £12million bid was rejected by Tottenham Hotspur but Liverpool have been tipped to return with another offer in the summer. It is believed that Liverpool offered cash and at least one player.
As detailed earlier today on the site, we believed there was the possibility of a late move tonight due to some activity behind the scenes but it wasn't to be.
I'm surprised Benitez had an interest in Defoe , a similiar replacement to Owen ? -
something is seriously wrong with martin jol.
spurs normally employ the long ball tactics, thus height is essential. defoe is too short for martin jol's system. he should either change the teams tactics or sell defoe.

Martin Jol don't want sell Defoe because he lost to Benitez after saying he is better than him

If loan, I dun think Fowler will be so happy. He's now talking about earning his contract extension what. Beside he said Stuart Pearce tried to pull a fast one on him by saying he want 2m pounds for Fowler.
In the end, just let him go for free, but no compensation for Fowler for ending their contract early. Also, another condition is Fowler cannot play against Man C later this season.
Free transfer, not loan.

The difference between loan and free transfer is about wages .
In Fowler's case , if loan , MC will pay half his salary , and LFC pay half , but in this case , due to some agreement with Leeds , Leeds will pay half and LFC pay half , it's still a loan due by MC until the end of the season when Fowler's contract with MC ends .
It's some sort like a loan due , and some sort like free transfer .
It became more complex with those agreement with Leeds . -

The 23-year-old wants out of White Hart Lane after becoming frustrated with Martin Jol's tactics. Jol believes that Defoe and Robbie Keane cannot play together because they both lack "muscle". As a result Jol insists on playing Keane and Mido together with Defoe often rooted to the bench.
KOPTALK understands that Liverpool were informed that Defoe would be up for a move to Anfield if a bid was accepted by Spurs. Manchester United became aware of our interest and made a late offer yesterday, that was rebuffed.
Defoe was prepared to reject Manchester United to secure a move to Anfield but Liverpool's proposal of a straight swap with Djibril Cisse going in the other direction was turned down by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.
Had Liverpool offered hard cash, Spurs would certainly have sold. The Reds tried to value Djibril Cisse is at £12million but that didn't wash with Levy.
It is extremely likely that Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry and manager Rafael Benitez will play down their attempts to sign Defoe to try and prevent Cisse from getting the hump who wouldn't have been told of the bid unless it was accepted. Even then Cisse could have rejected the move as he's desperate to remain at Anfield. Liverpool also don't want to make it look like they are keen to sell the Frenchman as that will have an effect on his future valuation should other clubs make an approach for him. -
