O'Neill considering £60,000-a-week Newcastle offer tribalfootball.com - February 16, 2006
Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd has tabled a contract offer to Martin O'Neill. The Sun says the Toon still hope to persuade Martin O'Neill to take charge.
O'Neill quit Celtic to support wife Geraldine as she battles serious illness. He is refusing to commit himself job-wise while they wait for her latest cancer test results.
He has not said yes to chairman Freddy Shepherd's £60,000-a-week, four-year offer put to him in Glasgow last Sunday, but has left the door open until they get news from his wife's specialist.

Newcastle's Shearer giving £1M to charity tribalfootball.com - February 16, 2006
Newcastle United captain Alan Shearer is giving up £1 million as he pushes on with retirement plans at the end of this season. The Geordie icon will donate EVERY PENNY from his testimonial match to charity.
Shearer, 35, marks a decade on Tyneside with a clash against Celtic at St James' Park on May 11.
He said: "It is a great honour and privilege to have a testimonial game at this wonderful club.
"I hope that by pledging the money to charity and worthy causes, people less fortunate than myself will also benefit in some way from my career."
Shearer joined the Geordies from Blackburn in 1996 and broke Jackie Milburn's club scoring record after hitting his 201st goal this month.
The former England man added: "I'm just a sheet metal worker's son from Gosforth but I've lived my boyhood dream.
"I've played in front of the most loyal fans in the world, captained my country, played for the home team I supported as a boy and broken the scoring record of an absolute Tyneside legend.
"Now I have my final opportunity to say farewell to the fans who have supported me throughout my career."
Ex-Sunderland striker Niall Quinn went close to raking in £1m for charity from his testimonial in 2002 - but Shearer is expected to top that.
Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd said: "Alan is the epitome of all that is good about this terrific game.
"He will be remembered by today's generation as the greatest player to play for Newcastle."

Lyon boss Houllier on Newcastle shortlist tribalfootball.com - February 16, 2006
Former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier is being linked with the vacant Newcastle job.
The Independent says Houllier's success at Lyon this season has his name high up on the Newcastle board's shortlist.
Houllier is understood to still be keen on a move back to English football where, sources have said, he believes he still has "unfinished business".
While the Liverpool board were convinced he had taken their club as far as he could when he left, the Frenchman still believes he could transform a difficult side like Newcastle in much the same way as he did at Anfield.
Houllier's deal at Lyon would allow him to move to Newcastle without trouble - though the French giants would demand some compensation.

Fans petition Newcastle for reluctant Hitzfeld tribalfootball.com - February 16, 2006
Newcastle United fans are pushing to have German mastercoach Ottmar Hitzfeld installed as new manager.
More than 1400 Toon fans have signed an online petition supporting Hitzfeld's appointment. However, the Independent says the 57-year-old is understood to be unconvinced that a German would ever be accepted in English football management and does not feel that Newcastle would be right for him.
Indeed, there are those in the Newcastle hierarchy who believe that despite Hitzfeld's record as a manager - he won the Champions' League in 2001 and the Bundesliga title four times - he would still be a difficult candidate to sell to the Newcastle public.

Ranieri declares Newcastle interest
Former Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri has revealed his interest in becoming the next manager at Newcastle.
Ranieri, who endured an unsuccessful spell at Valencia after leaving Stamford Bridge in 2004, is currently without a club but has not been contacted by Magpies officials.
He told BBC Sport: 'Newcastle is one of the best clubs in England. They are a good, ambitious team and that is very important for me.'
He added: 'I am looking for another good job with a club who has ambition. Newcastle is a good team, an ambitious team. It is one of the best clubs in England.'
Newcastle parted company with Graeme Souness earlier this month but have not formally approached a manager to take over, with caretaker boss Glenn Roeder currently in charge.
'I came from Italy yesterday and at the moment there is nothing,' Ranieri added.
