BENITEZ: CARRA'S LIKE A HUNTING DOGhttp://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/drilldown/N155429070330-0939.htm
Rafa Benitez has applauded the impact of Jamie Carragher on and off the field – describing the centre-back as a "hunting dog" who is always willing to learn.
Benitez already believes Carra is one of the best defenders around, but knows there is no danger of the 29-year-old resting on his laurels.
"For me, Jamie is one of the best defenders in Europe. He is always focused on the game, always trying to learn," said the Spaniard.
"That is the key for me because each season he improves a little bit. He is always listening and that is one of the reasons he can keep improving.
"It is the same every training session, always working hard, always trying to improve.
"He reminds me of a hunting dog, when I want something specific done in defence he is very willing to learn. As a defender he is someone you do not want to play against, to have marking you.
"He is always learning and that is so important for our future and his."
Benitez admits he is relying on Carra's discipline and organisation as the Reds enter one of the most important weeks of their season – first against Arsenal in the third place showdown, then versus PSV in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
He added: "Jamie has a strong character. He is always shouting and talking to the others, he's such a key player for us.
"He is good for the young players, showing them what to do and how to play. Carra lets them know what is expected. It is so important, he puts people under pressure and that is really good for team spirit."
