There's only one possible explanation to this , that he full plan was to defend ... and bring a draw back to Anfield .
We saw his plot in his set-up , an ultra defensive formation .
We saw Arbeloa , Riise , Zenden , Mascharano , Alonso , very defensive selection .
Upfront only has got the inefective , off-side always Bellamy , and Kuyt .
With Gerrard covering all from the midfield
Effectively , three up front .
8 at the back !!
How to win like that ? -
Rafa has also got maybe the Pompey match in mind (Fratton Park ) . His ideal plan was to draw at The bridge and get a win at Portsmouth , if possible .

why win pompey? ucl qualification more or less secured le ma.

and if benitez really wanted a defensive formation,
he really shd have only 1 forward---Crouch.
and zenden?
he was ineffective for most of the game.
pennant/gonzalez would have done better.
why opt for some1 who is slow to attack the chelsea flank?
in defense, play finnan and carra at both sides.
would have effectively removed the threat of the chelsea flanks.
either agger or hyypia would have controlled dogba in the middle.
since chelsea keep feeding high balls to him.
push up gerrard to a more attacking position.
mascherano and xabi play the central role.
wouldnt it have been better?

Ah Ben have confused himself with Jose.
He believe that he have two best players in each position.
At the same time, he want to field a weakened side to show that it can also beat chelsea.
But, most of the time, his ploy of playing NOT his best formation land him in deep waters.
It surprises Jose and Liverpool fans.
Penny wise, pound foolish.
Simple reason would be not to land his BEST team with any yellow cards so that they missed the final or to hide the BEST formation from his buddy, Jose.
Another reason would be to prevent injury.
By adopting this approach, the REDS team would have to defend deep and deal with Drogba and the players in superb form.
Liverpool was not really in great form and all seems to be saving their legs for the anfield trip, just like their manager.
It would be fatal next week as Chelsea can park a bus in front of their goal mouth and REDs would have problem scoring.
Then, history repeats itself in the opposite direction.
Liverpool have done well in the CL season this year and have come so far to be this close to final.
Hope that Ah Ben and his team dun let the fans down. -

just wondering why he never play crouch and sissoko and played zenden and kuyt instead -
ya lor should have played sissoko the destroyer (warning: can self destruct any moment, batteries not included)

I suspect Benitez may have planned this with in mind the remaining games in the next week and more. So many matches, its something he need to rotate and best utilise the squad to maximum effect.
However I also agree he got it wrong for this match. No Crouch? Even with 8 behind the ball, Crouch is good enough to tackle the Chelsea defence with his height and 'clumsiness' image.
Nontheless a good performance from both side as it showed how defensive solidness is portrayed in that match compared to the offensive fluidity in the manu/milan match.
Good matches indeed. This is called FOOTBALL!
