Stop Man United, that's all that mattered
IT took a long time coming, 12 years to be exact.
But when Ian Rush finally scored his first career-goal against Manchester United in 1992, it couldn't have come at a better time.
Liverpool's 2-0 win prevented their bitter rivals from winning their first league title since 1967.
How Anfield roared.
Rush, who netted the opening goal, recalled: 'It took me a long time to score against them. That was the season Leeds United won the league.
'Our victory over Man United meant a lot to the supporters, not because we won the league ourselves, but because we beat Man United and stopped them from winning the league.
'It meant a lot to us and the fans. After that game, the fans stayed in the stadium and sang my name non-stop for 30 minutes.
'Now, can you imagine the rivalry?'
Six months later, Rush achieved another career milestone.
He found his target for the first time at Old Trafford in a 2-2 draw. His goal set a Liverpool record, taking his total to 287, one more than Roger Hunt's mark.
Rush, who eventually scored a total of 346 goals in 660 games for Liverpool, said: 'It made me the highest goal-scorer in the history of the club.
'That was a fantastic moment.'
That it came against Man United made it even sweeter.
Such is the rivalry between both clubs.
Said Rush: 'It's different when you play Arsenal or Chelsea. Of course, they are competitive. But it's just different.
'If you speak to Fergie, he will tell you that they would want to beat Liverpool more than any other club. It's the biggest rivalry.'
FANS' FURY
In fact, the last player to switch from Man United to Liverpool was Phil Chisnall in 1964.
Imagine the fans' fury if Rush had moved to United. But it almost happened in 1988, when he was on the verge of ending his Juventus career.
He said: 'Fergie rang me and asked if I would join him at Old Trafford. At that time, I still couldn't quite understand the rivalry between the two clubs until an hour after Fergie hung up, (Kenny) Dalglish called me to tell me that I'm on my way to Anfield.
'He convinced me that Liverpool was my home, so I went back.'

Big draws for Big Four

I WAS in the taxi the other day when the friendly uncle started talking about tomorrow's blockbuster Premiership matches.
John is planning to stop working for five hours tomorrow just to catch the matches.
I asked him why and he replied: 'Don't you know? This is the biggest weekend this season as far as the Premiership is concerned.'
'The Big Four in England are squaring up against each other.'
As football betting goes, tomorrow's matches - Liverpool v Manchester United, Chelsea v Arsenal - have all the trimmings of epic blockbusters.
Although United did the double over Liverpool last season, bookies around the world aren't convinced the Red Devils can repeat that feat.
Singapore Pools have Liverpool at $2.50 for a win while a Manchester United victory is worth $2.57.
John, who has supported Liverpool for over 30 years, believes Rafael Benitez's men are ready for revenge this time round.
'Liverpool are on a high after getting past the group stage in the Champions League. The morale in the team is high and the players must be feeling confident facing United,' said the 57-year-old.
DOING BATTLE
'Liverpool require a good result especially after losing to Reading last week and they have the Kop to help them lift their game.'
While United have all to do at Anfield, Chelsea have the unenviable task of doing battle with the league leaders in London.
Despite the injury problems in the Arsenal camp, they are still favoured to win at $2.28.
John has opinions on this game as well.
'Arsenal play the best football in England while Chelsea employ an effective system to win games,' he explained.
'Both sides are short on attacking options but Arsenal are worse off as they face selection problems. Chelsea have the slight edge here since they have more options and quality in the squad.
Despite his predictions for Liverpool and Chelsea to win, John said he will not be punting that way.
'Both games are too close too call. All four teams cannot afford to lose, so I'm sure they will settle for a draw,' he said.
'I'm going to place $50 each on draw for both games and hopefully that will help me recover my losses for taking the five-hour rest.'
For those looking for the outside bet, the most likely score for both matches is 1-1.
Singapore Pools have this scoreline priced at $6.00 for the Liverpool-Manchester United game and $6.50 for the Arsenal-Chelsea match.
For the record, Liverpool and Manchester United have not had this scoreline in the last seven seasons while Arsenal and Chelsea drew 1-1 in both their league meetings last season. -

One stats my Man Utd friend , a very good friend told me .... If Man Utd on-top the table by 31st December , they usually run away the Title .
