Wild Swans
Three Daughters Of China
by Jung Chang
Wild Swans is one of the most stunning works I have ever read, and I would highly recommend this to anyone that seeks to understand the complex history of China during the last century. The book follows the lives of three generations of the Jung Chang's family. Her Grandmother, Mother and herself. While the book is not intended as a history lesson, the events in the family mirror the events of the nation and give the reader a unique perspective and understanding on events are seldom discussed in the western world. The family suffers and endures through the end of the last Dynasty, the Japanese Occupation, the Civil War and the ruthlessness of the KMT. But nothing could quite prepare me for the utter destructiveness of the Cultural Revolution and the horrors that went along with it. It is difficult for me to fathom that such atrocities could take place during my lifetime (I was born in 1965). And yet the book gives great hope that the spirit of humanity can and will endure.
