my views:
i think that studying part time while working is difficult.
Not only that the time committed for revision is limited but also the lack of support from employers.
Most company would want to utilise the employee up the to ratio of 200% & above and most view employee studying as a disruption to their workflow. Thus most employers emphaise that work should be more important to the employees.
Many of the managers have been a part time students previously and by right should be to understand the employees but they choose not to do so. There are also some managers who think that the employees doing part time courses are losers who cannot get into local university in the first place. But to speak up for students like me. I would say it may be due to our level of english. There are a lot students like me with D7 english and in singapore, this has became a black spot that cling to us even to university. Example, one cannot go for business course in poly due to grading in english and hence have to do part time course such as ACCA.
Due to economics issues, a lot of companies are now doing the trim fit approach and most employees has to work without OT.This is especially true for Accounting staffs and every staff multi-task to handle work of 3-4 person, 3-8 companies account. Most staff are utilise to at least 3-4 times. Yet there are many who yearn to acheive more than what they have done at the moment.They have taken it in their own stride to upgrade themselves. Unlike the past where by the employers has to send the employees for upgrading course, employee are digging into their own pockets do further their own education, hoping that one day eventually they can obtain a degree while gaining their experiences in work and be more sucessful in future or to be able to go on to the next level of the corporate ladder. Yet the employers are not been suportive.
In singapore, the only resources is humans and to have better achievements the govt is encouraging people to upgrade themselves to equip ourselves with better knowledge and skills in hope of getting the competitive edge over others. The govt also encourage the people to balance work life with personal life which include sport & health factors so that the people can cope with the ever increasing work stress. The control is quite sucessful within the govt sector and not the private sector whereby more than 70% of the singaporeans are involved and most has to work overtime on the almost daily basis.
Also the govt encourages females like me to take up engineering courses in Poly and move into engineering. With the so call good grades and yet fail to secure an engineering jobs as most employers are not willing to accept female into the field.Hence most of the female students are working in field other than the engineering sector.
Perhaps one day the govt should look into the portion of the market as more and more employees feel that the society that we are in is not longer employee savy.This could also be one of the reasons why more and more singaporeans are looking towards working aboard.
Hopefully one day the govt can look more into issues such as the above and improve on the current realistic situations. -
