There are so many complaints of bad service in Singapore all the time but I wonder... have you ever stopped to wonder why?
I remember a series of correspondence in The Straits Times a while back where an SIA passenger was complaining about the hostesses giving better service to the 'ang moh's and one very brave hostess wrote back to say that it's because the 'ang moh's are more polite to them, respect them, and treat them better. The Singaporeans would be demanding, grouchy, and won't even return your greeting whilst the 'ang moh's are the ones who would greet them back with a smile and say 'thanks' for things that are being done for them.
Just look around you and it doesn't take long to spot a Singaporean who's verbally abusing a service staff, being unreasonable, complaining very loudly and just misbehaving.
I applaud the service staff in Singapore for putting up with all sorts of unreasonable behaviour and demands. It's time we recognise them for their hard work!
The customer service staff at the various telecommunications companies like SingTel and StarHub really deserve special mention for their never-failing patience. I also find the staff at Bossini and Giordano generally very cheerful and helpful. Music Junction has staff who are also very approachable and helpful. Citicab drivers and Tibs bus drivers in general are also friendly and cheerful.
I started this thread because I'm really sick and tired of seeing fellow Singaporeans abuse customer service personnel. It's time we gave credit where it's due. Also, chew on this - are you a good customer / client?

Ju-Jitsu is actually very uncool to look at.. most of the time, it involves being on your back, learning how to tie up the opponent's limbs with your limbs while moving yourself into a position where the opponent will have to submit or tap-out (surrender) or suffer painful and terrible consequences...
cool-looking martial arts, look no further than Capoeira.. more like a dance...
but back to that...
if people get violent at where i work, i got a metal nightstick and handcuffs which i can use

No lah...my shop fixed price one...not pasar malam stall leh...she knows that I only give her the discount because she regular and also church friend mah... her friends come and buy also got no discount one, only she get only...dunno why she like that..must have been having a bad day but should not take it on me...the thing I cant stand is throwing the money on the floor!! where got people like that one!!?!!Originally posted by Qitai:But then hor, you know what you really should do?
I will give her another $1-2 discount just to make her happy. Some customer wants to bargain for the seek of bargaining one and if you don't give her at all, she not happy. So, give her $1-2 more just to make her happy.
Then, in future, don't give her so much discount off at first. Then let her bargain it down. This way, she happy thinking she got what she want. You also happy get your business plus happy customer.
Most customer are not so appreciative of the automatic discount one, because they usually think that everyone gets the same discount. -

Sadly, I'm still a Christian but I've stopped going to church for a long long time already. I couldn't stand the hypocrisy all around. Once I switched careers and got on 'ground level' and got exposed to people from all walks of life, I saw more ugly Christians than I would care to and now, I cannot step into any church without having flashbacks of the bad behaviour and encounters. Most of these Christians are very highly educated and they are very good at subtly threatening complaint letters if you don't do this or that for them. They're very good at what I call 'verbal blackmailing'.
I know religion ought not be brought into this issue but the thing is, before you try to witness to the world, please look at your own behaviour. So many of my colleagues who are non-Christians have been totally put off by the behaviour of so-called Christians. Whenever some Christian colleagues try to witness to them now or invite them to any church events, they'll always say, 'Don't expect me to ever step into a church. There must be so many nasty people in there! We see them at work, it's enough already!" We even had Pastors who fell ill and they and their family behaved worse than pagans.

The bad stories are numerous and too many to share...
on the other hand...last week I was serving a malay lady, senior citizen who was looking at some handbags..she was carrying many bags(hari raya shopping I guess) and looked very tired so I had her sit down and brought all the bags to her...she finally chose 2 which came up to $92.00 and she paid me with $100 bill...when I made to give her the change, she told me to keep it!!
$8 tip!!! first time ever in all my years receiving a tip...always thot only wait staff get tips...such a nice customer, really made my day!! -

Actually, there was a segment on News 5 a while back where they interviewed some taxi drivers and this Chinese taxi driver said that the most generous tippers were the Malay housewives. -

Totally agree with you...I too stopped going to church recently..its just really disheartening to see all the hipocrisy...no matter what actions speak louder than words and young christians could easily fall in their walk when they see such behaviour...I prefer to believe on my own in my own quiet ways now. carebear, recently, I learnt a new term from a fellow Christian who doesn't attend church anymore either and it's 'nominal Christian' - a Christian who doesn't attend church. hehehe!

I think I'm going to resolve to write letters of praise and commendation whenever I encounter good service staff from now on. I think it's not enough to empathise with them... it's time to give them the recognition that's long due. So folks, let's be quick to compliment, slow to complain. A little patience and long-suffering does good to the soul! Customer service personnel are people too... they have bad days too so let's try to be a little more understanding.

Not sure if I can make it for the BBQ yet..would love to go and meet you too and the bear....the christmas season is always a little crazy for me coz I'm in retail and its really the best time for me to earn a little bit more...will definitely try me best to be there but will only know closer to the date...

When i went to Bangkok, while waiting 2 check in @ the lobby, there was dis sg couple at the next counter getting their keys too. The lady was raising her voice & making a scene at the poor counter staff juz becoz they gave the newlyweds a twin room by mistake. When the staff explains dat all rooms r occupied @ the moment but will change for her as soon as they get 1.. ask her to go up & rest 1st.. the lady goes: "I wan to c ur manager!". Singaporean style. Her hubby (ears red red..) tried to calm her down & ask her not to raise her voice aso kena brushed off by her. She die die aso wanna TOK to manager.. tsk tsk. As expected.. the poor manager come out wif all smiles, nod all the way & apologised. Explained to her abt the shortage of rooms.. ask her to wait for them to clear the rooms 1st den will bring her to her desired room. On top of dat.. offered her complimentary vouchers & extra treats. Den she diam... turn to hubby & said:"never complain they tink we stoopid".
Times like dis i wish i am not a singaporean! We make really lousy customers.. even when we go out of sg -

Y'know, since when did it ever become 'fashionable' to yell and be rude and demanding? Since when did one 'win' by squeezing blood out of service staff?? If anything, I think it exposes the really ugly side of the person. I mean, to scream and shout and be unreasonable and demand to 'see the Manager / Supervisor' etc just to get some vouchers and 'better' treatment? sheesh!
