The pure-logic reaction of the guys here makes alot of sense. But I know it's almost impossible to hate a best friend over this situation. When the same happened, I was pissed & hurt, but couldn't help feeling guilty.
As for a purely platonic, very close friendship between a guy and girl, it's still possible.... just has a kinda 50-50 chance of happening. Still, have faith in people, and I guess most importantly, treasure what you have.

It's kinda like I've had tons of bad experiences with people, maybe I'm suay or what to keep bumping into them and for a while, I did become anti-social, dreading meeting new folks and all but then I realised that acting that way might rob me of the opportunity of making real pals so I decided, what the hell, come what may, I'm still going to stick my head out.
This applies to love too. hehehe! Had my heart broken on quite a few occasions but I'm still gonna give it my best shot when I finally meet 'him'. 
Sure, I might be setting myself up for heartbreak again but then, it's not fair to cheat someone of a chance with you just cause of what other folks did to you in the past, right? But, I digress.

Elindra, i'm sorry to hear what happened
Losing a best friend can be like having an arm/leg chopped off... it hurts so badly at first. But, after you've had time to think through what went wrong, you may not feel as bad as you did when you initially found out he wanted to cut all ties.
This friend of yours seems to be acting very childishly! And did you say that he's ignored you for a period of time before? If so, he is acting very emotionally and illogically. Good friends should not do this to each other! Sounds like some kind of emotional blackmail to me.
Yea, just leave the ball in his court - and if he contacts you again someday, then fine, if not then it's his loss!
Most importantly, try not to let this episode affect you when you make other friends - do not shy away from people who can be potentially good friends! Don't EVER think that any of this is your fault, cos it sure isn't. Be strong Take care. -
