Considering that jazz is somewhat eclectic by definition, IÂ’d refrain from categorizing Astrud Gilberto as a bossa nova singer, and from making a cut-and-dried distinction between bossa nova and jazz.Originally posted by Gazelle:I think Gilberto is a consider a more bossa nova singer than jazz. for jazz singer you should check out, Etta james, billie holiday and ella fitzgerald.
Somehow I feel that most jazz listeners in Singapore only appreciate those smooth and modern jazz. not much people are really into those mind twisting jazz like contrane, pharoah sanders, miles.
hey !!!..yup i'm listening to that too, but if you love to hangout chillout wif your friends just to listen some local jazz you can simply surf this net at www.umiyushida.com - she's my niece, she's been singing for about 10 years I guess, she's 29 and am sure you will love and support local jazz singers, read more at her website and you'll findout more about her, Gong Xi Fa Cai !Originally posted by elindra:I think there is nothing nicer than listen to the smooth sound of jazz late into the night.
What do you guys like to listen late into the night?
Currently listening to Astrud Gilberto's soulful & soothing voice
Shadow of Your Smile
The shadow of your smile
When you have gone
Will color all my dreams
And light the dawn
Look into my eyes, my love, and see
All the lovely things you are to me
Our wistful little star was far, too high
A teardrop kissed your lips
And so did I
Now when I remember spring
All the joy that love can bring
I will be remembering
The shadow of your smile
Now when I remember spring
All the joy that love can bring
I will be remembering
The shadow of your smile

Mind-bending stuff is fun at times, but I personally find that the “hot jazz” styles of East Coast musicians in the mold of Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, and to some extent even Milt Jackson tend to often be more about technique than substance, and this can sometimes grate. Since the topic is about jazz after midnight, the implication is that we’re talking about winding down at the end of the day. Listening to Monk’s running up and down the keyboard on “Misterioso” is not the first thing I would want to be listening to at such a time.
In light of that, my picture of the environment within which the music would be played would be along the lines of the room being lit only by the stereo’s operating lights, a Cohiba Esplendido in one hand and a Laphroaig in the other. Well, that was my habit at the end of a particularly long day, so it's not so much my picture as what I would actually do. Anyway, within such an environment, “At Last” would be acceptable, but I would rather go for something a bit more bluesy, or something of the "cool jazz" West Coast style, such as:
- Sonny Criss – Blues In My Heart
- Billie Holiday – Stormy Weather or Solitude
- Dexter Gordon – The Shadow of Your Smile
- Chet Baker – These Foolish Things
- Oscar Peterson – My Foolish Heart
- Frank Sinatra – One For My Baby
In my opinion, Chet Baker runs rings around Miles Davis and Coleman Hawkins puts a lot more soul into his art than John Coltrane, but thatÂ’s another topic for another time.
For that matter, it'd be good if he stopped using Ged's name in vain!Originally posted by SydneyLibrarian:2) I would really appreciate if you Stop using God's name in vain.
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear - do you realise how stupid you sound? If you can't define jazz with anything even remotely approaching clarity, how could you possibly say someone is or isn't a jazz singer?Originally posted by Gazelle:As for jazz, it is beyond technique, it is about free form of expression, feelings, and improvisation. I would prefer that you dont call yourself a jazz lover if you dont even know how to appriciate the art of playing and listening jazz.
Yea, that too!Originally posted by Gedanken:For that matter, it'd be good if he stopped using Ged's name in vain!
Gaz, you've really got to stop your fixation with me - there's only so much laughing I can do in a day!
It does goes to show your limited understanding of Jazz and Bosa music. When I say understanding, I dont mean just by reading the lyrics, knowing the tune and the name of the artist, but more towards the feel and influence of the artistOriginally posted by Gedanken:Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear - do you realise how stupid you sound? And in turn, if you know as much about bossa nova as you claim to, you would know that bossa nova was developed as a blend of samba and West Coast jazz. If musical roots are as important as you've stated in Astrud Gilberto's case, then by the same logic bossa nova's roots in jazz justfiably qualify it as a form of jazz.Originally posted by Gazelle:I would prefere that you go do some listening and reading about the clave and feel of bosa nova and then listen deep into the voice and style of Gilberto.
People dont simply call Astrud Gilberto as "The Queen of Bossa-Nova" for nothing. Yes I am sure Astrud Gilberto can sing Jazz but her music and soul is not rooted to jazz.
