Favourite Chinese New Year Goodie??

  Whats yours?? Do you all make it or buy it? If you buy, what brand is it, from where?
  
  my top 5 faves are:
  1) pineapple tarts..........
  2) Kueh bangkit,
  3) Kueh buloh,
  4) love letters,
  5) the mini sambal prawn rolls....
  
  all are home made except the love letters ( to lei che to make that)...all my great grandmothers peranakan recipes.....scrumptious

  but seriously, of all the stuff, i still like bak kwa even tho it's now eaten as an when we feel like it
  
  wonder if i should go splurge and buy a kilo of the bacon version, after buying some more medical insurance

  but very unhealthy!!!
  and $55 per kilo is a crazy price to pay for a bacon product!!

  what's a bacon bah kua? sounds like something that it goes hand in hand with Guinness.

  dude... you GOTTA eat that stuff... just wander to a Bee Chun Hiang and ask for it.. eat the stuff, lick your fingers, clutch your chest as you suffer heart seizures
  
  basically, they made bak kwa out of bacon.. and it's about 200% fat, which makes it DEEEEE-LICIOUS!

  mine is the peanut cookies...tis one i can eat non stop...lol...then pineapple tarts lo...the shrimp rolls...spicy one...lol... ...and of cos those soft drinks...

  Bak Gua, Love Letters, Pineapple Tarts, Almond Biscuits, etc...
  
  I've also taken a liking to Swenson's Seaweed Tulles Cookies... yummy!
  
  Bear, I know what bacon bak gua you're talking about. Haven't tried them cause they're pretty expensive and also, all that animal fat! I hope you eat them in moderation!!
  
  On a different note, do you guys know that towards Chinese New Year's every year, we get a lot of admissions from hypertensive patients who aren't compliant to their medication schedules, overeat drastically during this period, and then end up in our wards for all manners of ills?

  Choco, do you prefer the open-faced pineapple tarts or those with the pineapple filling encased inside a pastry 'shell'?
  
  BTW, I like the pineapple tarts sold at Smiling Orchid bakery at Ghim Moh. Incidentally, that bakery's new year goodies are quickly sold out too.

  The bear is a TY bear that some collector took and dressed up with a lovely kimono! I collect TY beanie babies and I love kimonos so I just had to copy that photo! I actually added that picture when I first created my account, not knowing then that you needed to be a P-member to activate your avatar. I was quite surprised to see it myself cause I had forgotten all about it! hehe!

  Ah... to me it doesn't matter if it's open faced or covered.
  
  I'm more particular about the pastry. It's gotta taste home-made not factory produced... you can tell by the fresh taste and the use of better ingredients e.g. butter vs margarine / palm oils.
  
  My mom buys them from a bakery in AMK. Usually the homemade or bakery-made tarts are better.... those in supermarket / stores, are better left alone

  i am getting a sorethroat just by reading this! i think i know which bacon bah kuah you are referring to. Its those sliced ones (not the minced ones) which have layers of fat. Massive Attack man.....

  I don't like it leh Texture too soft cos of the fats. I prefer the regular ones, more bite to them.
