There has been much discussion on what would have happened "possibilities" had we kept christmas island.
So let imagine you found out a long lost eccentric relative had passed away & left you with a very very big island(1500 hectres) like the one I have featured from australia, what you would do with it?
Would you sell it or rent it?
Develop as a resort? what sort of resort and who would come to such a resort?
Sack your boss then move your family out to the new island and live off the land
Become the newly proclaimed landlord and heavily tax all inhabitants already there to give up their virgin daughters as payment for past rentals arrears
Turn it into a smugglers cove and sanctuary for pirates, thieves and bandits dealing in all sorts of contraband, black birding and white slavery
or just make it your own private sanctuary.

Wow... if I had my own island, I'd designate areas of it for resort development! A resort for honeymooners, one that's more family-oriented and one for the backpackers. I'd also develop tourist attractions like a huge Animal Sanctuary, an Amusement Park with a few daredevil rides, an Aquarium, an Art Museum, a large park, etc etc. I'd have a Cat Park where cats are kept on the grounds, free to roam and lounge about too.
That'll bring in a steady stream of income! However, I wouldn't want my island to be too popular because I would like to keep its rustic charm.
I'd love to encourage cottage industries to be set up on my island too, so that islanders could pick up some skills and earn money by selling their handiwork.
And my island would definitely be a gourmet's paradise!! There will be all manners of eateries and pubs!
And on a more secluded corner of the island, on slightly elevated grounds, an area set aside for my home. And a small neighbourhood nearby for my family and close friends.
