I can only think of things you can't get in a wet market though seafood and fish is best to get from the wet market.
Like I said fish I prefer to buy in a wet marketOriginally posted by sidestep1984:some traditional leaves for veggies..like kesum...and others...
variety of fishes are more in a wet market...
theres seriously alot of variety in wet markets if u took the time to look....
just that wet markets can get alot of stuffs arh...hehe..sure they all look green..but some got differences....Originally posted by elindra:Like I said fish I prefer to buy in a wet market
Don't know what is a kesum. Anyway maybe I'm more potatoe in my cooking la and I also do not eat alot of the traditional stuff. Don't get me wrong. Not that I look down on traditional stuff, it's just that it is not suitable for my palate
But lately you can get a lot of weird veggies which only sells in the wet market in the supermarket now.
Daun kesum are the leaves of polygonum/Vietnamese mint. It's a garnish for laksa lemak.Originally posted by elindra:Don't know what is a kesum.
Haha okOriginally posted by Kuali Baba:Daun kesum are the leaves of polugonum/Vietnamese mint. It's a garnish for laksa lemak.
I remember one leaf that I couldn't even get at the wet markets is the Daun Limau Perut leaf - used for making otak otak. I wanted to try an otak recipe once but couldn't find any stall in any of the wet markets I went to selling it. Guess that's something you'll have to grow in your own garden.Originally posted by Kuali Baba:Daun kesum are the leaves of polugonum/Vietnamese mint. It's a garnish for laksa lemak.

Originally posted by Rhonda:I guess stuff that you can find in wet markets and not in supermarts could be stuff like :
- Vegetarian Products
You know, those gluten stuff? Mock whatever-meat. And my favourite, vegetarian ham from Taiwan.
In supermarkets it is either in cans or frozen
- Fresh Yong Tau Foo
Those in supermarts are usually pre-selected and pre-packed and often, not very fresh. So, limited by choice and freshness.
Believe it or not I have never bought Yong Tau Foo in a wet market or supermarket. Never used in any of my dishes before unless you consider fishballs under Yong Tau Foo than I get my fav fishballs from the wet market.
- Certain dried foods
Supermarts don't offer the various grades of kang hee (dried anchovies) for instance. In wet markets, you have the tiny ones, the small ones, the medium ones, the medium ones that have been beheaded and cleaned, the larger ones, the better grade ones, etc... I guess that'll apply for other dried products like dried octopus, dried cuttlefish, etc.
Don't use these either. My mum don't either so...no diff for us but some supermarkets have the different grades. Don't ask me about freshness coz I have no idea
- Achar (Pickled Vegetables)
In wet markets, the stalls selling the tau poks and noodles would usually sell their nice, home-made achar in inflated plastic bags. I used to buy them as snacks for the day. hehe!
They have this in the supermarket as well but we hardly eat achar
Can't think of anything else right now but will add on to the list when I can recall more items.
go geylang one..sure have...really......no jokeOriginally posted by Rhonda:I remember one leaf that I couldn't even get at the wet markets is the Daun Limau Perut leaf - used for making otak otak.
