Wet Markets or Supermarkets?

Elindra, I still haven't seen any supermart that offers different grades of the dried products I mentioned. Well, maybe they have two choices for the more popular stuff like the dried ikan bilis but for folks like me, that probably isn't enough for our more discerning moments. hehehe!

Sad to say we hardly use these dried products so I never really looked at them
I guess ultimately where you prefer to shop depends alot on what you eat

Ah! I just remembered some other stuff that the wet markets have that supermarkets don't!
- Freshly grated coconuts
Choose your coconut from a rattan basket full of 'em and watch the vendor grate it for you right before your eyes... available only at the wet markets!
- Freshly squeezed coconut milk
Can only find the packet version in the supermarts.
- Mutton
Only certain wet markets have this available for sale, and I definitely don't remember any supermarts that sell mutton. Enlighten me!
- Duck
I think like mutton, an entire duck might not be found in most wet markets too, much less the supermarts.
- Authentic, home-made recipes for different curry pastes and powders
Those mama shops in the dried food sections sometimes sell an array of those for the various types of curries you might feel like cooking that day. Needless to say, they are usually better than the packaged / bottled stuff.
- Ancillary stores alongside the wet markets that sell kitchen wares
I love to wander inside and discover the things they have inside - moulds for making curry puffs / soon kuehs, kueh pie tee moulds, steamers, dim sum bamboo baskets, individual ceramic pots for double-boiled soups, pestle and mortar, etc etc ... They're mini treasure-troves sometimes.

i learnt cooking in the most awkward manner...
my mum died when i was 13...my dad worked overseas..so it became a case of practicality that i need to know how to cook or else waste money buy from hawker centres oni...learn from looking at my aunts...learn from books...learn from internet...learn from the tv...mainly just experiment arh..
anywaes,....peranakan food..abit abit arh...like laksa...kangkong belacan...assam pedas(peranakan or malay?i think peranakan leh..but i guess theyre fusion of chi and malay styles...)....and some desserts like bubur cha cha and other stuffs like that...
i am more into meditteranean....italian...malay...nepalese...basically...i'm into fusion arh... -

They do sell whole fresh duck in the supermarkets. They have the ones from Australia too which I love but that is frozen but the texture of the meat is much much better

But as for meat, I prefer to go to market to get them...
Although it is OK to me to buy them at Cold Storage -

I haven't tried cooking - no one really trusts me yet. I watch and help pound the rempah and the heibi. Most of the recipes I have are taken from TV shows and books. -

When I moved house a long while back, I gave away a lot of my kitchen equipment and utensils. Since then, I haven't gotten round to replacing it, especially since I'm 'in limbo' now and will move again soon so now, I don't even own a wok nor a cleaver nor a chopping board, etc etc etc.
Someday soon though, I'll have my own kitchen again! And it'll be a glorious rebuilding of one aspect of my life that I love and miss soooo much! And then maybe, ronnie, if you fly over to meet me, I'll cook for yer! hehe! -

I like both,
Wet markets when I'm bored I go take a stroll, look at the fish section, look at what ppl selling and buying, look at what ppl eating.
Supermarkets is a good place for meeting of the minds, when I'm stressed and want to take my mind off things I go to supermarket.
When people go to supermarkets they are very focused on what they want Sometime if observant enuf you can roughly tell the character or lifestyle of a pretty girl at the supermarket by the shelves that they browse and things that they buy. -

browsing thru the aisle, looking at the dried herbs and all...

prefer wet markets--can get fresh seafood and vege, meat...recently found that some supermarket also not bad, like giant.
