Ideal wedding proposal?

A couple of months back on a saturday evening, i saw this guy kneeling down at the ground floor of the Esplanade with a big bouquet of roses and a 'Will You Marry Me?' banner on the floor, and shouting his proposal to his gf who was at the rooftop. The usual saturday evening esplanade crowd was in full force, gawking at what i felt should be a private affair for the couple.
When i saw that, i felt very embarrassed for the guy.. but my gf was saying it was soo romantic blah blah blah...
So i was wondering: do girls in general prefer to have the guy humble himself in public as far as the proposal is concerned?
Cuz i think if i were the girl, i'd probably feel very embarrassed and run away. -
Nope... I wouldn't want my guy to have to go through humiliating acts. No need to make public spectacles of ourselves.

Err I don't like something that public as well.
I mean flowers and ring in a romantic setting is good enough.
I mean you can see the attempt there. It is the thought that counts that you are trying to make it special
Not the amount of money and the publicity. -
Nothing spectacular for me and my girlfriend. In constant discussion of our future and wedding is just one of them.

I find that girls (at least the few whom i know better who are willing to talk about such things) tend to be more insecure in a relationship, and require constant reassurance that the guy she is with is gonna be the one who'll marry her eventually. In other words, a relationship must lead to marriage, otherwise it is pointless to carry on, esp since 'youth for a woman is precious and limited'. And this mentality is in people who are in their early 20s!
Well, so i suppose an engagement is a form of saying (to put it crudely): "yes, i'll marry u. I ain't wasting your time, so please don't run away.."

I hope he manages to get over this. Doesn't help that probably the whole of America ... and a few parts of the world... knows about it. -

The engagement was a traditional practice dating back to medieval times... well, old-fashioned, but some people (like myself, family members & some of my friends) enjoy it, that's why we had engagements when it came to our turn to get married
The engagement ring is usually a diamond - I recall reading somewhere that the tradition was started by the Italians.
For me, our engagement period was a time where we planned for the upcoming wedding (believe me, that was A LOT of work, but worth it cos we enjoyed ourselves so much in the end ). We also took that time to go for pre-marital counselling to prepare ourselves for our lives together. -
