For me, Borders for me anytime!
Have been a loyal cust there for the past 4-5 years... Service is extremely good! I used to know the manager there... She always reserve good books for me...
Kino is alright but i always get lost there... haha...
And yes, i agree... I see Popular as a stationary/ assesment books place for families rather than novel-books...
I used to borrow alot from the library too... Till i lost my card and someone borrowed a book with it and clocked up a fine of over $15... And i dun wanna pay for it... so now i dun go to libraries... And the books condition are quite bad too... Someof the pages are flipped till they are so fine and yellow...
Anyone here borrows from 2nd hand bookshop? Was at Sunny the other day... Sooo crowded! -
Kinokuniya @ Orchard is the best. wide selection of books. will go there at least one or twice every month to look at their new stocks.
i loved the comic book section, very up to date with american and japanese comics.
i also visited borders too, for my monthly dose of magazine reading like PC Gamer, FHM among others. -
I go Popular cos close to my home. I like Shang Wu Yin Shu Ju. Maybe trying Books Galore see whether can find those rare Chinese books.

Bras Basah bookstores have a very limited range of books. They're good for textbooks and popular fiction but if you're looking for non-fiction books, it's still Kinokuniya and Borders that reign.Originally posted by shade343:Popular and Borders sucks. Besides, the bookstores at Bras Basah are mostly set up for quick sales, not for casual browsing. I can spend half a day or more at Kino or Borders but cannot imagine doing so in Bras Basah.
In defence of Popular, I'd like to highlight that at times, they do have non-fiction books at really good prices. For instance, I just bought a boxed set of a Yoga Mat, a Yoga instruction book with full-colour photos on every page, and a VCD for only $39.90. (Or was it $29.90?) I also recently bought a Forensic Science Encyclopedia for just $8.90. Stuff like that...
Popular also brings in cookbooks and recipe mags from Malaysia and Hong Kong that aren't available elsewhere. -
After a few months, my favourite bookstore is still 'ddddddrrrrrrrrrrr.....(drumroll)... QIANG!!!' Kinokuniya!
They carry a wide selection of books of all genres but I'm really impressed with the range of non-fiction books they carry. Of course, they could do with yet more titles on their shelves but it's really impressive enough.
Borders also carry a wide range of titles and I think their cookbooks section has far more titles than Kinokuniya's. However, Borders does not have any privilege cards nor loyalty programs, and their magazines are generally priced dearer than those at Kino so Kino still wins hands down. When it comes to fiction though, there's this '3 for the price of 2' promotion at Borders that's attractive.
