Like, what's the implication of having six cylinders as opposed to I don't know how many other cylinders you find in cars. Is 6 cylinders the norm?
Arranged in a V-shape... what are the implications of that? What other ways can they be arranged in and what difference does it make? -

basically, some engines layouts u can find are:
inline - cylinders in a straight line
flat - cylinders on each side. imagine cylinders in a V, but the angle of the V is 180 degrees
V - 2 banks of cylinders in a V shape, know angles include a range from 62 degrees to 120 degrees
W - basically 4 banks of cylinders forming a W shape, although strictly speaking, they form something that looks more like 2 Vs joined at the base
having talked about the layout, i'll name some engines configs that have appeared b4, and name an example
inline 3 - mitsubishi colt, smart for2 coupe
inline 4 - honda civic, mitsubishi lancer
inline 5 - volvo S40 T5
flat 4 - subaru impreza
V4 - ford Corsair
inline 6 - BMW M3, nissan skyline
V6 - mercedes SLK350, lexus RX300
flat 6 - porsche 911, legacy spec.B
V8 - ford mustang GT, mercedes mclaren SLR
W8 - vw phaeton 4.2 w8
V10 - porsche carrera GT, lamborghini gallardo
V12 - mercedes SL65 AMG, lamborghini murcielago, pagani zonda, ferrari 575M
W12 - vw phaeton 6.0 w12 -
