engagement ring, IMHO no need to be very expensive as it only last for a few months or a few years, before replaced by the wedding ring.
It is the thought, the feeling and the love that counts at the end.

The wedding ring is important for its symbolism of never-ending love and also to signal to the world that you've chosen to commit the rest of your life with a partner already.
A wedding ring used to be a sort of 'hands off!' signal to singles who might otherwise try to hit on the ringed person but these days in our sad, perverse society, there are folks who view the ringed ones as 'a challenge'.
I don't think we should place a minimum monetary value on the wedding ring as such. To be honest, I kinda feel repulsed when I see ladies showing off their wedding rings, talking about carats and how many K gold and all that because hey, what really matters is not the ring per se or how much it costs or how large and brilliant the diamond but rather, it's the fact that someone loves you and you love someone back and you're both going to build a life together.
I guess if the couple is well-off and can afford a nice ring that sets them back by a few thousand, well and good. If the couple is struggling financially, a simple wedding band will suffice.
If I had a few thousand, I'd rather spend it on a nice honeymoon.

agreed. ring just a ring lah. utilitarian reminder of your vows.
most impt is it is practical
for most people, walking around with a massive carrot on your hand is not practical -

also, contary to what older folks will tell you... (ala, in-laws), i stick by the logic of, bringing my wife (future) to places around the world with the money..... the experience is priceless compared to a few pieces of metal, or 100 tables of wedding.
besides, it also gives my wife bragging rights that i brought her around the world over 10 countries.
thats sufficient enough to cover a mediocal wedding dinner + cake + rings..etc. -
i think Stephen King and his wife's wedding rings are plain bands of silver...
that they love each other, makes the rings priceless to them.. and they wear their rings with pride.. that's all that matters -

because veyr hard to find bands of really pure silver... and because the pure metal is soft... usually is silver coated ones.... ontop of another type of metal.
but really, i am still looking for the someone who met the criteria.... sigh -

pure precious metals are too soft to work...
usually an alloy... silver is usually sterling or 925 silver... still very soft..
i thought of a wedding band in the form of a trinity ring, made of titanium is near and dear to me.. but it would cost around US$1,800
what appealed to me was that the ring would be near indestructable.. and that would be my commitment to my wife

Our White gold wedding band...well
It's sooo badly thrashed up and scratched that I don't think they can repair it 
Ours cost about 2k in total coz of the diamond I think. We were talking about getting a new one. -

i think when i have a wedding band, i'd wear it with pride and be loath to remove it.. how scuffed just shows that it's been worn through the years and even when worn out, it's still treasured

I'm always puzzled by couples who dont wear their wedding bands...it seems kinda sad to me that such a significant symbol of their love is so easliy removed with lame reasons like, it doesnt match my outfit, it gets in the way, its uncomfortable to wear....I used to have a colleague who would remove his band when he was in the office and out and about and would only put it on when he was going home... now what is that supposed to mean??!!! we girls in the office had very little regard for him and his "dishonest" ways! what a mockery of that ring and all it means...

Me, I'm kinda fascinated with opals. They seem to have a fire within and depending on their grade, some of them can be really mesmerising.
Also, instead of diamonds, crystals would be a good replacement too. Ah well, I'll think more about this when this ship here is ready to be docked. hahaha!!
