My job sometimes requires that we do not wear any rings on our fingers. Hell, we aren't even allowed to paint our nails, even if it's just a clear coat.
I've seen my colleagues wearing their wedding bands regardless and there are also those who wear it on a chain around their necks. I mean, here they are, so proud of their rings that they'll think of all sorts of ways and means to keep it on them and there, you have cads like the guy you mentioned in your workplace, going around not wearing his.

hee.. my hubby takes off his ring when he goes to work and only wears it when he leaves too, cos of his work as well. Ya, he wears it around his neck.
about the not wanting gold rings, its funny cos I never like gold rings actually but he insisted on gold cos.. he's ultra traditional teochew and he say he's jus an old fashioned guy and still prefer to hold on to his old fashioned ideas about love and family. Our wedding rings are just simple gold bands, no diamonds or whatsoever.
and its funny really, after wearing gold for some time, i grew to like the warm lustre it has against the skin, instead of the colder sparkle of silvery platinum etc. -
The ring he proposes with can be considered an engagement ring. The ones you exchange with your vows are your wedding rings.
There is no rule with regards to cost of rings
Get whatever you like, according to your budget ! Keep in mind that a wedding ring's gotta be practical enough to wear everyday through all activities. Maybe one day, they'll come up with wedding rings that are designed to be worn either as rings or as pendants. I don't mean the usual threading a chain through the ring and calling it a 'pendant' thing but rather, it will be designed to actually look like a pretty decent pendant when worn that way too.
