Going to move to corner unit of 3-room flats
and am obliged to stand in front of my neighbour's flat for some time while opening my door
Now... I have a dilemma
When do I know it is RUDE to LOOK IN and say hi
and When do I know it is RUDE NOT TO look in and say hi???
It's a bit like morse code.
So I have this code. I don't know if it is right or not.
1. Living Room Door Closed/Living Room Window Open
Brisk Brief glance and Wave (Don't care they see or not)
2. Living Room Door open/Living Room Window Open
Pause, Slow Wave, Normal Length Greeting Hello How are You! Dinner ah?
3. Living Room Door Open/Living Room Window Closed
Slowl Wave, Short Greeting, Brisk walk
So when do you greet or not greet your neighbours?? -
when he looks at you, and makes eye contact?

This can be quite a tricky issue.
If you keep peeking inside their window, it might be construed as being 'rude'. Yet, if you never look their way when they're obviously there, it might seem as if you're not acknowledging their presence and thus, still be construed as being 'rude'.
It's a case of 'Damned if you do, Damned if you don't'! -

I think if you spot someone and he sees you, say hi.
If you don't see anyone, move on
If the other person doesn't see you, move on -
Why let protocols run your life? You in the matrix or something?

Worse come to worse, piss your neighbour off over some trivial matter and you never have to greet him/her again.

dont bother. most people dont greet their neighbours nowadays.

No way I'm gonna be one of those HDB dwellers that skulks around to deliberately avoid the neighbours.
I believe in being friends with the neighbours. If they're not the type who greets? I initiate lor!

Thing is... my neighbours are generally friendly... the previous owner AND them have lived in their flats since 1976 so they go back a LOOOONG WAAYYY you know.. and they're so kindly... plus I smell the Auntie cooking like REALLY GOOD FOOD all the time.. and u know one should always try to be friendly to neighbours who can cook good... food...
Kinda difficult to glance casually when you got to turn your head 90 degrees to look into their living room...
Also, the problem is exacerbated by me having to STAY in that position to open/close my door (position right outside their Living Room window) for at least 5 minutes... if it is regular corridor neighbour.. i just walk briskly past their open doors/windows/ watever.....
But perhaps its just Me. I'm not really by nature a very greetingfriendly person. Smiles are okay. Small Talk stumps me. and I definitely find it difficult to stay in a house where I Have neighbours peeping in simply cos i left the windows/door OPEN to have some wind. So its me I am judging the world by my unfriendly standards. -sniffle-
