When a father gives love and it's returned, it makes him a powerful man. I have a soft spot in my heart for my dad although we don't always agree. Thank you dad for letting go, not moulding me after your own heart, allowing me to make my own decisions unhindered and unhampered and standing by when I crumble. My dad is not brillant or gifted but I salute his unfailing commitment to place my interests above his. I am where I am today because my dad loved me, most of the time. I want to visit my dad with open arms and tell him what he means to me but I am characteristically undemonstrative of my affection. I want to reach out to my dad and whisper in his ears your love I will keep for evermore. I want so much to tell my dad I love him but I don't know how to.

Like u, I'm unable to express my affections openly for my Father. He's quite a typical, chinese family man. Conservative, stern & a man of few words. Growing up, we lacked of communication badly. Following his footsteps, all of us (siblings) refused to tear away that "shy" mask when we r facing him. We love him dearly as much as he loves us.. just that we don't show it.
As some1 mentioned earlier, some of us might have taken our fathers for granted.
I did. Till 1 day, my father collapsed without any warning symptoms. My strong, fit & energetic Papa who doesn't smoke/drink, suffered a heart attack. Doctors diagnosed that his arteries were abt 80% blocked. @ the ICU, we were told, the next 48 hrs shall decide whether he pulls through or not. That was the darkest hours of my life. My father was dying, I have yet to tell him I love him & I have yet to make him proud. That night, regrets came hitting hard on me. No amount of tears or prayers can deliver my unspoken love to him if he fails to make it.
6 yrs after, my Papa still acts "cool" sometimes but me & my siblings r no longer stingy with our affections. Though we hardly say it, we display it clearly in our own ways! Eg. I'll write mushy stuff & paste it somewhere eye-catching for my parents to read. And my sister made use of her naughty little boy to relay her affections to 'Gong-Gong' on behalf.
I juz wanna say... Pa! I love u!
No.. seriously, don't wait. "Tell" him.

Camellias, my story's similar to yours! My dad nearly died too, a couple of yrs ago. Anyway, it's great that you & your siblings r no longer stingy with your affections towards ur dad. I'm sure he loves you all very much! -
cam, sl, my dad didn experience any of those close to death incidents, but somehow these days i started thinking, (well, actually nel's mom made me think) that human lives are fragile, we can die anytime... dun wait till ur dad's gone before u visit him... that shook me up... i was procrastinating all the time, dun really wanna meet him cos of how it would upset mom n all that... but, heck care lar
dad in my eyes is strict, and fun altogether... in nel's words, when he's sober, he's just like any other dads around. even when he had been drinkin, he seldom say the wrong stuff the way mom does (n those words hurts.. they'd get me to tink, y didn u abort me if i made u suffer so much?
) so far dad's only said sth upsettin on one or two occassions, n the damage wasn even half that of mom's 
all in all, dad's easier to get along with rather than mom tho... the age difference between me n her is smaller... -
I was drawing some lines when i remembered how i was beaten up for being "stupid" when i was 5..
i was supposed to draw lines with a ruler, n that was the first time i played with one.. dad was teachin me how to hold the thing down, n draw line against it...
dad was sittin in front of me, n he drew from top to bottom.. wat i saw was from bottom to top n so i did the same thing..
he said i'm doin it wrongly n told me to do it again.. n when i made him lose his patience (he's rather impatient with a horrible temper.. i inherited both )he started beatin me up
thats when i learned how to use a ruler properly -

We could have come from different planets for all we understood of each other, still my dad loves me unconditionally and more than I deserved. A halo would not have looked out of place above his head. Sunday bless the dear country that puts "God first" in its constitution is usually not a work day. It will also be the day I unleashed my passion and tell my dad how much he means to me as effortlessly as letting an ice cream melt in the sun. It's like a provisional kind of heaven and a release from a long time of containment. Is there anything more glorious on earth?
