Whoooaaaaaa.... FINALLY, an expert who's able to explain photography in English!Originally posted by jOhO:alamak.. i think she more blur like this leh.. u all.. tekan her only.. ahahah
honestly i THINK she doesn't have any manual setting on her cam becos she mentione the half moon (nite shot mode) on her cam. if i'm rite, cams with these "scene" modes dun usually have manaul settings.
i was thinking her shot is good as is, use the exact same thing as she's done, just on a tripod.
but.. if she has, and wants to touch the manual controls.. well.. honestly, it's easier SHOWN than TYPED how to do it.. ahahha
little stream, maybe i try to explain to u a little basics of photography, esp the part on why a tripod helps.

Three projects I intend to do once I get it...
Project #1 : Go around Singapore and take shots. Break in the camera! The more shots I take, the more affinity I'll have with my camera... and then I'll learn how to push the right buttons to get just the right shot! Also, I want to have a pictorial to remind me of Singapore when I migrate.
Project #2 : Related to my long-held dream of creating a kiddy stories website using Sylvanian Families Dollhouses and what-not. Have wanted to do this for years now!! (Slightly over 5 years!!)

yo... wouldn't have a clue where i took it from, but i remember a museum with horses out the front, and this was taken behind a high railing, so actually my lens was pointed thru two metal bars.Originally posted by SydneyLibrarian:jOhO - I recognise the circular quay pic... but where did you take the one above it? *gasps!Originally posted by jOhO:ok i'm gonna tempt some pple
all these were taken NOT with an SLR.. just a simple digicam..
well not so simple lar.. but most digicams would be able to produce these, with a little photoshop knowledge.
Wow... your cookies remind me of the special Christmas cookies recipe spread in Woman's Day or one of those American women's mags! Wow!!!Originally posted by littlestream:Hee hee.......Syd, sorry hor, my neighbours didn't get to taste my cookies. Did you get tricked by the phrase "Back door friends are best"?
I brought it to the office instead. Want to join me in the Bank?
Do you bake? I love cooking and baking (my friends from my young adult days will die if they hear this). But I only abuse the kitchen/oven during festivity.
wow... nice desserts! altho i'm not a sweet lover, but i know it takes alot of time and effort to make these things, not to mention make them look beautiful.Originally posted by littlestream:Hello jOhO:
You are right. My digicam has no manual settings. All I've got is a function selection button. * sigh * looks like I may have to upgrade. I will re-run reading some of the posts here for ideas. Thanks very much.
In appreciation, have a treat of my home-made cookies :
pai seh.........virtual ones first lah. If opportunity presents itself, I will send you some.
Yes! Yes!! Wait for me to get my new digicam-baby home first, then let's troop on down to some place like The Botanic Gardens for a day of photo-taking!! Can play with my new toy!! And wah... can bug the experts for tips some more!!Originally posted by LazerLordz:Sensei(jOhO) will teach, and I'll assist Maybe a Club 30 Photoshoot is in the works
Indeed they do..wonderful stuff..how much does UPS charge for meal delivery?Originally posted by Rhonda:Wow... your cookies remind me of the special Christmas cookies recipe spread in Woman's Day or one of those American women's mags! Wow!!!
yes indeed.. "just" a digicam... even tho it was a pretty high end digicam (coolpix 5700) but it's still the same "principal" as in it's different from an SLR.Originally posted by Rhonda:*gasps!
All these taken with a digicam?? WHOA!!! The close up of the mosquito on the rose totally took my breath away!!!
Oh, thank you, Sensei jOhO. I really don't need to upgrade?? *phew* "heng ah". Okay, I will try the close up technique. My colleagues cajoled me to sell the cookies. So, with the close up photo, I can promo my cookies on the bulletin board across the Bank. Thanks vm.Originally posted by jOhO:wow... nice desserts! altho i'm not a sweet lover, but i know it takes alot of time and effort to make these things, not to mention make them look beautiful.
i think u can try taking close ups of your culinary works! as in go real close and make it feel shy, it'll turn slightly pink and that's when u go SNAP SNAP!!
u can upgrade if u wanna take photography to another level, but for a happy snapper of desserts and life, i think this cam is fine.
Aaaaahhhhh... gee, I never knew all that!! Hey, thanks!!Originally posted by jOhO:yes indeed.. "just" a digicam... even tho it was a pretty high end digicam (coolpix 5700) but it's still the same "principal" as in it's different from an SLR.
would u believe that with my current set up (dslr and expensive lenses and all) i won't be able to reproduce that shot?
most digicams have a "built-in" macro function, which means u can still focus while the lens is very close to the subject. for an slr to do so, u need a proper "macro lens" which i don't have becos i don't need it. so... if i wanna shoot that mozzie again, i have to spend about 600 for a brand new AFD 60/2.8 micro, or 1k for a AFD 105/2.8 micro....
so... dun doubt the capabilities of "just" a digicam.
Oh, LazerLordz........you have been so sweet. I'll pay for postage anytime.Originally posted by LazerLordz:Indeed they do..wonderful stuff..how much does UPS charge for meal delivery?
Oh woweeee!!!! That's superb news!!! We can have a 'shang yue' (admire the moon) outing, drink cold beer, talk nonsense, and eat your cookies!!Originally posted by littlestream:Oh, LazerLordz........you have been so sweet. I'll pay for postage anytime.
Okay, the rumour has it my sister may visit late summer. If she really does, I'll have her hand carry some to you folks. How's that?
Shooting Distance (from the front of the lens)Originally posted by Rhonda:Aaaaahhhhh... gee, I never knew all that!! Hey, thanks!!
I think I'll go to the Botanical Gardens and try doing lots of close-ups of flowers and what-not and see how they all turn out.
Say, are you able to go to this site : http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/camera/digital/f_index.html and select the Canon Powershot A520 specs and see if it has the capability of doing close-ups like that one? Thanks!!
Oh, Rhonda.....you are really cute (funny). I chuckled at your "shang yue" bit. Must I wear my "chu ying tai" costume?Originally posted by Rhonda:Oh woweeee!!!! That's superb news!!! We can have a 'shang yue' (admire the moon) outing, drink cold beer, talk nonsense, and eat your cookies!!

Wow... you're really in demand! But of course!Originally posted by jOhO:i'll be "shang-ing yue" at a wedding! ahahah
it's the most popular date for weddings. i've already rejected at least 20 enquiries for that date becos i was booked more than a year ago...
so for as long as i shoot weddings, i dun presume i'll ever get to shang yue. unless of course the bride's name is "yue" in which case, i shouldn't really be eyeing another man's woman.

Wow... a lotta information! I think I have reached my memory limit for tonight! I'll definitely be experimenting with the MACRO mode and then I guess I'll understand better! Thanks, jOhO, for checking out the specs for me!Originally posted by jOhO:Shooting Distance (from the front of the lens)
Normal AF 45 cm (1.5 ft.) - infinity
Macro AF 5 - 45cm (2.0 in. - 1.5 ft.) (W)/30 - 45cm (11.8 in. - 1.5 ft.) (T)
Manual focus 5cm (2.0 in.) - infinity (W)/30cm (11.8 in.) - infinity (T)
This is what you're looking for, the part in blue.
just to translate what's written in blue for you in normal english:
in MACRO mode, at the WIDE end (meaning when the cam is fully "zoomed out") it can focus at objects between 5-45cm away from the front of the lens.
at the TELE end (meaning when the cam is fully "zoomed in") it can focus at objects that is between 30-45cm from the front of the lens.
verdict: yes it can do "close ups" but it's not class leading. some cams can take shots of objects just 2cm away from it's lens.
however, if you think about it, your TELE end (fully zoom in) is an equvalent of 140mm (dun worree about the figures), but basically it means, even tho u have to shoot from a distance of 30cm minimum, u get to zoom in all the way, which of course means that the object is bigger in ur frame.
loosely speaking, a "close-up" can also mean that a small subject is big in ur frame; it doesn't talk about how near or far it is from the lens.
but if u wanna get technical, then yeah it matters. ahhaha aiyah, damn, really got quite alot of stuff if u really wanna talk about it. let me know if u want me to go further.
