I hate to take the elevators. Paranoid lah.. after hearing all those molest, robbery & hantu stories.
For the past 20 yrs, i was spared from taking lifts. (Dad feared for our safety, chose 2nd storey) So no need to face neighbours / strangers.. no need to hold or smash any buttons.
Alas, cannot escape.. im taking the elevator @ least twice everyday coz i've juz shifted to a new plc. So... *press 'CLOSE' repeatedly*

haha... I think I still haven't shaken off my ugly Singaporean bit in me LOL! Sometimes I do both lah, hold the door open for others, but some other times when I'm in a hurry or really wish to have peace & quiet, I'll press the 'Close' button! -
When I was in Primary 3 and became a latchkey kid, I remember my mom telling me that if I'm waiting for the lift and notice any 'suspicious' characters, to not step into the lift with them but instead, to pretend to be waiting for someone and take the next lift instead.
She also said that if I'm alone in the lift and some guy manages to step into the lift just before the door opens, to quickly press 'Door Open' and step out and wait for the next lift.
There were, and still are, a few dodgy characters living in our block. Even dad warned mom and I about not stepping into the lift with them, especially if there's no one else.
I guess because of that, I tend to jab at the 'Door Close' button once I step into the lift alone. If I hear footsteps and can have a quick visual assessment of the person, I will press 'Door Open' if my sixth sense tells me to.
If I'm in a lift in a busy commercial building or a mall, I'll hold 'Door Open'. There are CCTV's installed in the lifts in those buildings so I'll feel safe.
Y'know, it's kinda odd but whenever I have flatmates, I won't feel so skittish. But living alone, I tend to pay a bit more attention to safety and security issues. Defence Mechanism, I guess! -

If I were in an elevator alone, waiting for the doors to close, and saw the entire Swedish Bikini Team making a headlong rush for the same elevator, I'd sure as hell be in fear of my life and be hitting the "Door Close" button repeatedly.
