Hitchhiking is simply not in our culture... but in the states its important because the hitch hiker might be in the middle of nowhere hundreds of km away from public transport

ceecookie, you may be mistaken, do you mean Ashburton or Ashurst? Ashburton is in the south island of nz, the economy rely heavily on seasonal work i.e. freezing works in the meat industry. It would be going way out of your way, crossing the cook's straits. However, if are travelling north, Ashurst is in the north island of nz. It is about half an hour drive from Palmerston North ( Massey University). Do you mean you were travelling up north as in Whangarei?
