Since I am "playing" one, thought I start another wu liao thread.
My manager is on vacation. I am his back up
. But I suck at managing people. I believe I make a lousy manager because I am the "cho kang" type.
Are you a good manager? Do you think you will / can make a good manager? What makes a good manager?
Someone told me, a manager do not need to be smart. Just hire good people who can do the job well and then the manager can take all the credits.

Stressful, isn't it? How long will your boss be gone for, littlestream? And how many staff will you have to manage?
I was once placed in my manager's role for 6 months while she was on part time. Wow... the stress I faced, from angry customers demanding this, that & the other, to attending staff meetings, board meetings etc etc! I must admit I'm not good at handling people
- would much rather be a behind-the-scenes person and quietly do my work at the computer with no one to disturb me! But I did learn alot from being in the manager role.
I'm thankful that my staff were really cooperative though, they're a good bunch of people I still keep in touch even though I'm no longer in that job!
And I had a great example to learn from - my then manager was the best boss I ever had!
Best thing I can say is... don't stress too much, you'll do fine - just maintain a cool, calm exterior & be a bit thick-skinned!

well, i'm not senior enough to take the place of my boss in case he's on leave
there are other victims for him to look to
well.. i'm a loose cannon at work, and the staff kinda likes me coz i look out for them so working with them is not a problem...
however, my boss's bosses.. now.. they don't like me -

Most often, I can spot them quite accurately.. the chow geng slackers & hardworking potentials. Not dat im on the way to become 1... i had to be sure dat im not slacking with the wrong bunch.. Haha!

I used to be a Type A and would jump at that opportunity but nowadays, I'm totally Type B, sometimes, Type C even! Never knew it was possible for a Type A to regress so much, but hell, I'm a living example!
I don't really have an interest in becoming a manager because I dislike having to deal with behavioural problems. I mean, I can be quite wilful and obstinate at times and it's too painful and anal for me to have to be a manager!
I guess between being a Manager and a Specialist, I'd rather be the latter. Manage my own time, own work... leave the managing of unpredictable people to others who welcome this 'challenge' - to me, it's just a migraine-triggering, royal pain in the ... posterior unmentionables!

i like being a manager.. that is until i become Managing Supervisor =D u get to MANAGE the managers to manage thier workers to manage thier work lol.. but mostly when my directors get the bomb..i get the bomb... i feel like managerial position always get the biggest bomb man.. but we always seem to be in the middle of all the bullshit. so... be boss it best la HE HE !

a good manager hires people with strengths he does not have...
i am crap at doing administration....but good at implementation, planning, thinking....in other words i only talk and do nothing....
to succeed i need a 'army' of strong admin/attention to details workers to 'carry out' my ideas to fruition

Sorry, people..........a lapse of silence from me.........taken ill. No, not from the stress of backing up but the heat. Having this nagging headache since last Saturday.
Hey, interesting & some comical views of managerial positions eh?
I also like the no ka kia approach. I am not good at delegating work and having to deal with other depts. I have also reached a stage, just do a job and go home. Besides, I don't like confrontation or battle. These jiao kia all come and tell me this urgent, that urgent. I guess I could hold a strong front but I don't like it and I hate myself when I am harsh with people.
Okay, you folks have a nice weekend. Got to start working on those "urgent" stuff. Bey sai ke forum liao. 
p.s. we have a long weekend. It's Canada Day tomorrow. Yippeeee....may drive down to Niagara Falls.

i personally prefer to work alone and am very good at it. my human relation skills sucks. can never make a good manager, not that i am interested anyway.
