if only they're gg to make it so for the cold storage at Nort point.. movin back to yishun soon... after mama managed to get a place thereOriginally posted by Rhonda:Gee, didn't know that old threads can 'expire' and then you can't put up new posts in there anymore.
Anyways, Part I of this thread was http://www.sgforums.com/?action=thread_display&thread_id=119162&page=2.
So, this is Part II.
Recently, I realised the beauty of supermarkets when Cold Storage Holland V became a 24-hr supermart! Now, after evening duty, if in the mood, I can head there to get stuff. So convenient!
Also, I can step in and buy small amounts like a handful of beansprouts, which I did recently, and pay only $0.14 for it! I don't think you can do that in the wet market! This is very handy for singles like me who seldom cook and when we do, we only need like six prawns, one onion, five stalks of asparagus, like that!
It's 24/7... and it's still 'on trial'. Once, I was there after 11pm and the place still had queues at their cashier. Not bad!Originally posted by SydneyLibrarian:Wah..... a 24-hr Cold storage at Holland V... cool, man!! Issit 24/7 everyday or only on weekdays/ends?
Our supermarkets here in Sydney open from 6am- midnight everyday... v. handy Can even pay my bills/credit card bills there
Midnight cooking session eh ?Originally posted by Rhonda:It's 24/7... and it's still 'on trial'. Once, I was there after 11pm and the place still had queues at their cashier. Not bad!
I wonder how the situation is like after midnight though. Hopefully, they'll have enough customers to justify keeping it open for 24/7!
The wet market's not good for folks like me who work shifts and find it hard to get up early enough to troop on down before the stalls close.Originally posted by subarugal:i still prefer wet market..
Dnt noe y but find stuff more fresher leh..

and supermarts label all their stuffs.... so tat ppl like me won't buy the wrong stuff!Originally posted by Rhonda:Also, supermarts sell instant food, which is very handy when you need to eat in the wee hours of the morning.

I like how they package things cleanly and neatly too!
The wet market may have greater variety, but the supermarts have things which you might not be able to get in wet markets too!
Stuff like cooked and shelled crab meat, exotic seafood that's specially flown in, like yabbies, etc.
I guess both have their pro's and con's.
I think the point I've highlighted in red must be a fallacy, an old wives' tale.Originally posted by subarugal:humh.. microwave ? hummhhhh
too much radation no gd.. and its heaty when taken too much.. heh...
but microwave can do very nice ikan billis without fats.. and oils.. heee
very crispy too...
A cooking session? Erm... not happening, unless it's in your kitchen!Originally posted by subarugal:usually food in wet market are more fresher.
even come across buying poutlry frm supermarket and the inner potion isn't fresh. and if u compare the meat with wet market u will see the different of frozen meat to fresh cut..
so when are we having a cooking session one of these days ?? hee...

Hee hee...........time to get a flatmate. But I guess if you buy a bit more and have leftovers, you could bring lunch to work?Originally posted by Rhonda:This is very handy for singles like me who seldom cook and when we do, we only need like six prawns, one onion, five stalks of asparagus, like that!
If you manage to find an honest butcher, it's much easier to buy from them if you're a dodo, like me, at knowing which cuts of meat are best for certain dishes! I used to troop on down to the wet market, tell the butcher that I'm going to cook 'dao yew bak', not too fatty, please, which cut of meat would yield tender meat? and the butcher will recommend the best cut. Cooking pork chops? Soup? Whatever? The butcher always knows which is the most appropriate cut!Originally posted by elindra:Or maybe you girls can have a cooking session at my new place. I have all the fancy equipment and I'll just take it easy and eat only
I think for the wet market you really have to know your cuts of meat especially since cutting makes alot of difference and some dishonest stall keepers do cheat!!!!
I guess armed with only a microwave, the repertoire is considerably less. Besides, imagine microwave cooking a dish, then having to microwave it again to heat it up - a tad too much use of the microwave.Originally posted by littlestream:Hee hee...........time to get a flatmate. If you put it in the freezer, it won't go bad so fast rite? think rhonda posted a list on how long stuff can tahan in the fridge/ freezer.Originally posted by rainee:Oh yea, I had the same problem cos over here I am only cooking for myself. My roomie only cook for herself and her bf. So it is quite hard to buy a lot of stuff only to watch them go bad
