Well, the food, obviously, but life becomes a lot easier when you cook and drive. While I think of it, does anybody have the recipe for the beef noodle soup they sell at food courts?
Rhonda's got a point about the shopping - my trips back to Singapore end up becoming resupply missions.

You can purchase the Prima Taste retail packs. Alternatively, my friend told me Kee's chicken rice paste is just as good. Kee's is another S'pore product and it comes in a glass bottle.
Don't know about the Chinese community over at your end but over where I am, you won't believe you are in Canada.
For me, I miss local durians and Indian rojak.

I've live abroad for more than two decades, leaving singapore at a tender age. For a tiny tropical island, the selection of food on offer in singapore seemed exotic. Any obscure craving could be appeased. We are just begining to have food halls here. There is a certain degree of skill required, working out what is edible asian food from the rest which is unpalatable. Cooked for European tastebuds with a generous helping of sea salt. i.e. deep fried wontons served in sweet and sour sauce.
Singapore is a super efficient city. The government servants here are that disobliging breed that one meets almost everywhere in boring jobs. For every three people who work, two others sit and watch! The indifference is so endemic it reduced half the staff to apathy.
Most services in singapore are within arms reach, really handy. An automobile trip is not required to accomplish a visit to the doctor or mechanic who charged for their services at an hourly rate which defies belief because it could finance a space shuttle launch. I might as well open my purse and let them loot it of whatever arbitrary amount they deemed fit.
I don't miss the three seasons in singapore. Hot, hotter and hottest. The heat assaulted one like a mugger, the second one steps out of the shade. I may have to grab my coat for many months in the year, wiped away at the frosted windscreen, exhale clouds of frost in the cold air as I speak and the fuel bill is astronomical but there is a touch of alpine charm in autumn.
Newly arrived singaporean migrants speak to me about familiar sounding places in singapore, I nod politely but I have no reference to the mentioned locality. I am not literate in Mandarian nor understand singlish although it can be engaging. Everyday, I straddle two cultures,the east and west in my interactions with different ethnic groupings. My parents tell me I have too many white habits. i.e. lying in the bath and drinking earl grey tea with a dollop of fresh cream. Singapore is a distant memory I hold dearly but I cannot call it home. -
I would say our chicken rice!!! Nothing beats Singapore Chicken Rice and chilli crabs
I love earl grey with fresh cream too and it's better chilled!!!
Rhonda there are better countries to shop in. Singapore is not the best place to shop
