I'm guilty of eating on the bus when I'm on Morning duty.
I have to catch the bus early, 6am to 6:25am and if it's a bad day at work, I don't get to eat till 11am or later. There have been times when I haven't been able to eat until after my shift is over, and the worst scenario was when I only got to eat my first meal of the day at 4:15pm.
I realised I NEED to have breakfast when I'm on morning duty in case I end up with a bad day at work with no break. 
I take my meds and vitamins early in the morning before stepping out from home and that's another reason why I NEED b'fast.
I try to eat at home first but sometimes, that's not possible so I'd just buy a bao from the coffeeshop downstairs, then when I'm on the bus, I'll take discreet nibbles. If it's a double-decker, can 'hide' upstairs and eat but on a single-deck bus, no chance to eat and then have to scoff the thing as I walk from the bus-stop to my workplace.
That's the only time I eat on buses. -

actually, i vaguely recalled a no-eating/drinking sign on every single air-con bus.
so i'm not gonna preach on 'can't you read the sign?'
infact, eating in private cars is a no-no. because it invites cockroaches....
if you girls are afraid of these critters.. lets make the world alot better by not providing a feeding place and a brreding place for them.
trouble is, public transports are not always wiped down or vacuumed... so your bread crumbs etc hangs around till some insect tar-pao it back for it's kids.
eating on the bus is really unhealthy... you will be subjecting your food to the recycled air and stuff shared among the other 40 passengers on it....
for me, i KNOW that when I eat, I hate being interrupted in the mid of chewing.
If someone tries to drag me from my food while i'm half-eating... I'll sock him/her (yes you got that right, I dont discriminate gender) one.

why? thousands of reasons.
it will be great if we can use the bus to eat our chicken rice , kuey chap anything and drink anything.
the smell will make the bus driver hungry and he can also eat and drive
then sbs also provide big plastic bags for rubbish.
even better , bus company and mrt sell hawker food and drinks inside. can make extra money. also get hot sexy babes to sell tiger and anchor or calsberg. or even perform bus or train top dancing, the railings or bars are just nice for sexy dances.
after all one hr journey , must as well have meals inside and watch live shows.
then crockcoaches and rats will be inside.
better still bring cats and dogs insdie buses and even mrts.
let the big dogs or fight inside trains when everyone can watch and place bets. just close one eye, if they poo or pee.
also have betting 4D toto carts inside mrt rains.
i don;t mind as i will not be the one clearing the messed.
still a clean and pleasant bus and trains is worth it.
The lady is probably the type that will shout or bark back if anyone says anything. she may even say, i paid money why cannot eat.
believe me, even today there are idiots who take things from shops and until when caught just say, take first , later can put back or pay. so not stealing but too late, police already handcuff them. they do not understand what is stealing or theft.
the number of shoplifters caught in singapore is enough to say there are a lot of idiots out there.
so lucky you threadstarter did not say anything or else if she has mental problem and starst curses and vulgarities, even the bus driver also scared.
