I have to disagree with you on this. It's a stereotype that people who hold such jobs are of a lesser breed. Perhaps they were unable to further their studies, are carrying on a family business or were unable to find better jobs. As I mentioned in another thread, a job is only a title. Stereotypes depict artisans as poor earners but this isn't always the case (in GB they can earn handsome sums) and a person can always move up the ladder or switch to a different line altogether. It's a woman's loss if she shuns a man just because of his job, he may have plenty to offer in other respects. -

my second point: women don't have to marry a construction worker to have sex with one. in fact if such woman DOESN"T marry a construction worker, she can even have sex with construction workers! wouldn't that be an even more exciting prospect?!
Then again, if women really marry construction workers for sex, they'd probably better off not get married because then they can then make money from something they enjoy and have sex with cmore onstruction workers and have a thriving business.

I think most of us would really like to generalize, but I think not ALL Singaporean women are like that. Without sounding too much like a bigot, but i think "wood door match wood door, bamboo door match bamboo door"

construction worker - I think a construction worker is given such a bad name in SG. Just go to the west and look at their benefits and pay plus it is considered a skilled job

Then again, it all boils down to individual, needs, wants and I guess education level and the so called 'social standing' It's not easy even out of love if a girl wants to marry such a guy, you can imagine the amount of resistance she will face from her family and friends.

The highly respected Korean scientist, Hwang Woo Suk who was invovled with cloning the dog recently is such an example. He spends 4 hours a day with his wife, when both are asleep.

So, I'd try to avoid workaholics because I want a close relationship, and not just get married for the sake of getting married. I like to be close-close and love deep-deep one!
Then again, if you married the man out of love, and he later became busy due to his career, which is in turn due to his motivation to provide a comfortable lifestyle for you and the kids, then you can't really blame him because he's working hard for his family. In such cases, I'd just give him a nudge and say, 'Oi! Time for a vacation! Time for a date and some TMM!'. It's always good to communicate openly, especially about each other's needs, instead of quietly harbouring resentment and silently seething in anger. -

OK, seriously, it depends on why he chose the job. Is he a road sweeper cause he was a litterbug and is doing that whaddayacallit, some compulsory community service thingy? Or, is he one because he is not suitable for other jobs due to a lack of education? If it's the latter, then, was he uneducated due to poor family circumstances or due to laziness?
In my working life, I come across a lot of people from 'humble' or, as you say here, 'unglam' vocations and background and to be honest with you, career is no reflection of a person's moral character. I've had a crush on a car mechanic once because he was a friendly, cheerful, simple and honest chap who was diligently taking night classes to upgrade himself. You've gotta love a man like that! I'd choose him anytime over a pompous and arrogant millionaire!

Butcher... nope. Simply because my recent assignment involved working in some rich chap's home with an indoor kitchen and dining area that stank of hormone-infused pork!
EEEEeeeeeewwwww... I smell it, and I have nasty associations to my recent assignment there and I'd much rather forget it altogether, thank you!
hawker assistant - Don't look down on the lowly hawker, ok! I admire folks who are good cooks! These days, rich, educated people go into the food business too and they might start off as a 'hawker assistant'.
construction worker - My ex was a Construction Contractor at one stage. And recently, I had to nurse a construction worker from China and when his wife and sis-in-law finally managed to raise the funds to fly themselves down from China, we found out that he's a great man who single-handedly provided for his wife, and her family, on top of his own parents. I salute a man like that - a man of good moral character making a good honest living.
Afterall, when your gaze first locked on each other, you might not even know each other's profession yet!
Besides, it's all a matter of perspective too! There are folks who would never marry a nurse, esp after SARS, because they think that we do 'dirty' work and bring germs and all sorts of nasty infections home. -
Huh? This is absolutely ridiculous. Germs can be removed from bathing, and anyway, bacteria is everywhere around us.
