hey.. carbon dioxide.. carbon monoxide.. from a candle?
it may happen.. but during normal combustion, the levels of CO would be low compared to CO2...
and when enough CO is being formed by the burning of a candle to affect things around, the burn would be difficult because of low levels of O2.. by then, a candle does not have sufficient temperature to sustain itself for long and would sputter out...

There are campers who died when leaving their gas burners on for the night. The most recent case was in Europe..in Switzerland I think..about 2-3months ago. Anyway, carbon monoxide poisoning is painless and happens to be the no.1 trend in suicide methods for kids in Japan.

It happened when she lit an aromatheraputic candle for the night in a room with air-conditioning on and all windows closed. Due to lack of oxygen in the room, the burning of the candle cannot fully oxidize & thus forming dangerous carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide will prevent oxygen exchange in the lungs, resulting the person dozing off to state of unconsciousness & eventual lay death in less than 1 hour, depending on the room size. I am sending this e-mail out to all of you so that you will be aware of such danger when lighting aromatheraputic candles in any unventilated rooms.

My burning question, upon reading this thread, was : How is Carbon Monoxide formed?
I know that car exhaust fumes contain carbon monoxide. But how exactly is it formed?
A search on the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency, USA) explains that the sources of Carbon Monoxide are :
Unvented kerosene and gas space heaters; leaking chimneys and furnaces; back-drafting from furnaces, gas water heaters, wood stoves, and fireplaces; gas stoves; generators and other gasoline powered equipment; automobile exhaust from attached garages; and tobacco smoke.
Notice the common denomination amongst all these would be gas-powered appliances, or poor ventilation when burning certain substances like tobacco, or poor ventilation when having a burning fire in the chimney.
Nope... no mention of our very humble aromatherapy candle or burner.
Next, they listed ways of preventing Carbon Monoxide Poisoning :
Keep gas appliances properly adjusted.
Consider purchasing a vented space heater when replacing an unvented one.
Use proper fuel in kerosene space heaters.
Install and use an exhaust fan vented to outdoors over gas stoves.
Open flues when fireplaces are in use.
Choose properly sized wood stoves that are certified to meet EPA emission standards. Make certain that doors on all wood stoves fit tightly.
Have a trained professional inspect, clean, and tune-up central heating system (furnaces, flues, and chimneys) annually. Repair any leaks promptly.
Do not idle the car inside garage.
And nope... still no mention at all, of our aromatherapy candle nor burner.
So, whilst I still could not find out how carbon monoxide is formed, this site provides plenty of information, sufficient to allow us to conclude that it takes more than a burning candle or aromatherapy burner, to cause Carbon Monoxide Poisoning.
So, let's close this X-file! -

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas. It results from incomplete oxidation of carbon in combustion.
Remembered it was 'something like that'... but I had left Secondary School for donkey years already so had to refresh my memory!

anyway, note the list of stuff rhonda mentioned, most of these are heavy duty stuff, or things that do not go out easily, like tobacco, rather than candle... -

I guess it's not that easy to die from Carbon Monoxide poisoning in Singapore, since we don't use most of those appliances here.
I guess the only way to do that here would be to use a car! -
