August 5th, 2004 (12:00am) - Sony has confirmed that they will use Blu-Ray Disc technology for the PlayStation 3. This announcement came at press conference held by the Blu-Ray Disc Founders (BDF), who also announced that they are in the process of finalizing the read-only version of the Blu-ray Disc format (BD-ROM).
Blu-Ray is an evolution of the DVD format, designed to hold approx. five times as much as information on a disc of relatively the same size. Single-layer Blu-Ray discs can store up to 27Gb of data, a great leap over 4.7Gb on a standard DVD. The read-only version favored by Sony can hold up to 23Gb.
Since, Blu-Ray Disc systems easily feature DVD playback, it is expected that DVD playback and PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility for the PS3 wonÂ’t even be much of a concern. The Blu-Ray Disc System will not harm its planned inclusion. Not only this, but Sony also has plans to equip the technology into an upcoming version of the PSX, in order to provide a platform for videogames and high-definition movies. By doing this, Sony hopes to give a jump-start into the market for this new storage format.
