choco is right. There's no need to put on a front when it comes to best friends. Whilst it's kinda necessary in a way to do that with casual acquaintances, best friends are in a different category altogether.
If I were her, I'd rather my best friend be totally frank with me and say something like, "I'd love to meet you, but I've been feeling pretty down these days and don't really want to affect your mood as well."
I would appreciate it more if a best friend were to be brutally honest with me, then find out later that he/she had been putting on some nice facade for me.
