Sadly, given the dearth of courteous behaviour amongst Singaporeans, this may not be far from the truth.Originally posted by LazerLordz:I always thank the fellows who hold lifts and doors for me, and they give me this weird stare. And I give them a look that says, "wtf, is your brain working?Never been thanked in your life ah?"

everywhere i go, whoever hold lift for me and i say TQ, they werent shocked
and almost all say TQ when i hold for them
besides, my classmates are very courteous even tho we know each other for long

and i see frenly bus drivers or frenly passengers who gave up their seats to the elderly most of the time, and whoever receive the seats are quick to say thanks..

Question: You meant the ones you met?Originally posted by dragg:they find it hard to say 'thank you'.
i have witnessed it on many occasions. it has become a common sight. it is not so much that they are rude but maybe finding it hard to express their appreciation.
parents are really setting bad examples for their kids by keeping quiet under such circumstances. i have seen an old man giving up his seat to a woman with a toddler; people holding lifts so others can ride together;people picking up things for others etc.
same! i seem to meet pretty decent people too. even aunties, when i hold the lift door for them or press the floor for them will usually smile n tk me.Originally posted by laurence82:hmm, i kinda dont have the same experience as u guys

The experience in China...it's like each one for themselves, and as if the 'lau wai' (foreigners) owe it to them kind of mentality, so they feel it's alright if they con you into paying more, as an example. It's a legacy of the cultural revolution during which the ppl were really brain-washed. But the ppl in the richer areas like GuangDong, Fujian, Beijing aren't like this at all - even they can't stand the behaviour of some rural folks.Originally posted by neuros:same! i seem to meet pretty decent people too. even aunties, when i hold the lift door for them or press the floor for them will usually smile n tk me.
n the security ppl at my office building always hold the door open for me n reply w a very nice smile + "welcome" when i nod n tks them.
of cos i meet rude people in singapore, but they're really in the minority, rather than the majority to me... u want to meet rude people, try going china... or korea, though i've never been there, but i heard abt unpleasant experience wrt the locals there...
