Dengue Alert!

OK, this is for the benefit of our foreign friends : littlestream, Meia Gisborn, Sydney Librarian, Fatum, alexhsu, etc.
In today's headlines, "Dengue patients clog up hospitals; cases may top 600 this week", and "Non-critical surgery on hold".
No wonder I've been admitting more patients with Dengue this past few weeks. I remember looking at a lady who has Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever but is now stable, thinking, "About this time last year, I had to console the wife of a patient with a similar diagnosis who died within hours of his diagnosis! This lady doesn't know how lucky she is!"
I can't cut 'n' paste the entire article here, but here are excerpts :
"Public hospitals are postponing non-urgent operations because their wards are clogged with dengue patients.
"Hospitals are seeing a record number of dengue patients, with more than 60 new ones warded every day. They typically stay for a week.
"From January to July this year, close to 6,000 people were hospitalised for this viral infection, which is spread by the Aedes mosquito.
"A week ago, they (the Tan Tock Seng Hospital's CDC) started sending some of its less serious dengue patients to KK Women's and Children's Hospital. The agreement is to transfer up to three patients a day.
"The CDC's clinical director... has been training KKH doctors on how to treat dengue patients.
"Mr Khaw said he had advised the public hospitals to delay their non-critical surgery such as operations for knee replacements and breast augmentation. -
NEA to collect blood, saliva samples in Sims Avenue to test for dengue cases

dengue is sweeping the country..
thing is, i think we kinda killed ourselves with cleanliness.. so much so that our immunity system is shot to heck...
anyway, more fogging, check the flowerpots and everything else.. be almost unreasonably anal about these things... for everyone's sake.. -

I just want to ask... what do they use to fog the place?
Do they still use DDT? -
maybe the mossies have developed an immunity to the chemicals we use for fumigation? did anybodi think to take a blood and saliva sample from the mossies?

i caught a mozzie borne virus once in Thailand during national service .... they never IDed the virus .... but i was experiencing bouts of high fever .... severe pain in the bones and joints all over .... and bouts and bouts of diarrhea so bad that it felt like i was peeing through my anus .... might that be dengue ? ... cos it wasn't malaria for sure (else i'd have been charged for not taking malaria pills ... )
heard it from somewhere that once you get dengue, you'll never get it again ... body becomes immune to it, is that true ? .... -
Sorry to say, it's not true. ST reported this morning about a son who lost his 70+ yr mum to dengue and died in 5 days. His mum first had dengue when she was about 40 yrs old. If I remember correctly, it's somethg to do with the shorter incubation period due to the weather or humidity, so they breed and mature very fast. Then about 25%(?) of cases are from pte landed property - water in their pots, roof drains or floor drains got choked by leaves, etc. Not sure about other reasons. If someone has caught dengue before, subsequent occurences of dengue in the same person may become more deadly because instead of dengue, the person may end up having Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever, which can be fatal.Originally posted by zozo:Sorry to say, it's not true. Just last year, I nursed a man who had 'flu-like symptoms' for the past week, then suddenly collapsed on the Sunday morn at about 9am, reached the hospital at about 9:30am, and was pronounced dead by 10:15am! It all happened so fast, his newly-widowed wife couldn't accept it.
Basically, in Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever, the virus attacks our blood cells and our platelet count becomes critically low and essentially, we bleed internally to death. You'll start seeing little red spots on the limbs and torso of the patient. Death usually comes swiftly in such cases. -
For those that have stagnet water reguarly, get labour soap and place it on the area...
The oil makes it hard for mosquito to breed -

If not, burn citronella candles.I think they help to drive mozzis away.
