This is not the first time this issue has been brought up. The policymaker seems to be stubborn and does not care much about other views, especially from non-English speakers like me.
The street names are difficult for non-English speakers. Are they easy for English speakers? I doubt so.
I was not impressed when my friend mentioned the name 'Edgedale Plains' to me over the phone. I needed him to repeat the name three times to ensure that I had his address right.
The name may be special to some but it is definitely not suitable for Singapore society. One must realise that we are not 'ang mo'. Giving our streets 'ang mo' names will not lift our standard or make us look better.
In the past and even now, some people give themselves Christian names so that it is easy for others to remember their names. But what is the purpose of tongue-twister names for our roads? -
i personally dont understand why there is a need to use such street names.
does it really make that area more attractive to young people? -
uhh.. what's wrong with "Edgedale Plains"?
what next then?
if a place is going to become "Jalan Telok Pulau Mati Belakang" would an Indian dude make noise?
or if the place becomes "Govindaramasamy Road" would a Chinese dude make noise?
then "Lim Ko Pi Avenue" would raise anger in the Eurasian community?

many people have problems remembering the name, especially the old folks.
why not just stick to sengkang st 11 or 12 or 22 etc? -
because until today, most except the residents would not know the difference between Bukit Batok St 11 and Bukit Batok St 12 or the whole numerical range
one man's meat is another's poison...
this is as silly as renaming Calcutta "Kolkutta" and Bombay "Mumbai"
because ultimately, people still read the Bombay Times.. -

some ppl like it, some think it's too ang-moh-ish
personally... why can't they stick to something like punggol crescent or something... i would never associate edgedale with punggol if i haven't been there...
speaking of naming, do u know there's an estate in tampines call "PolyView"
who do they hire to come up with these names

Remember Simei? Why won't we have diaocan, guifei, xishi and ... roads? If they preferred edgefield plains over avenue, coffeefield plains over drive, likewise they should give up simei avenue for diaoan road! Having names by the 4 beauties, its definitely more meaningful than rivervale, anchorvale...

English, chinese, I don't care. Best to have a mix of everything so there's some unique flavour to the estates.
What I dislike is bad naming.
Take for example, " Parkview Square ". What does this name mean ??
Park = a piece of land
View = scenic , but also a suffix in property names, used to mean "area" like "drive", "avenue"
Square = a piece of land
It's like the developers just took the ends off other properties' names and pieced them all together.

Such a beautiful building with such a meaningless, lacklustre name. -

Never see SBW town. Names like "Wellington", "Admiralty" and "Canberra" certainly sound more colonial than those used in SKG or PGL areas.

many older people have a hard time remembering or telling the place.
only the young fancy such names.
for me it is ok if they want and english street name instead of those typical cheena or malay ones. but at least have something simple. -

Choco, you'd take great offence then, to this totally meaningless, nincompoop name for a block of condominium apartments, pretty near the Holland Road area - "Holland News".

I like the variety in our street names although I do agree that it is a royal pain in the unmentionables for those who aren't English literate.
However, I still think that our street names are 'prettier' than in the US, where entire areas can be named, "South Street Ave 1" or "14th N.E. Lane" or "11th Street". Isn't that super boring? -
All said, I'm very bad with street names.
I can live in an area all my life, and not know what a particular street is called! I go by landmarks. I can't even recall block numbers! Took me donkey YEARS before I realised the block numbers of the blocks surrounding mine, and even then, I often forget! -
The streets in Sembawang are named that way to follow pre-existing roads. Before the new town was built, Canberra Road ran through the area. Montreal Road is still there, lined by black'n'white bungalows. Admiralty Road is further to the north.Originally posted by iveco:Never see SBW town. Anothr estate where the streets were named after old roads in the area has to be Bukit Panjang.

Nowadays, they would not use St to classify the block number anymore
Now, Rivervale is 100+, Compassvale is 200+, Ancorvale is 300+, Fernvale is 400+
