Sooner or later, I'll have to start packing for my big move to Aussieland!!
I'm a forward-planner, so I just wanna get some opinions and suggestions from those of you who have moved overseas, either for work or studies.
What did you wish you had packed in your luggage for the move? What did you regret not bringing along? What's available here that we take for granted, but is not available at all, or hard to find overseas?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Wow... interesting to read everyone's responses
When hubby & I moved to Sydney last yr, all we had was our suitcases (about 40kg in total). We filled them with basic stuff such as
- our CVs / referral letters / educational certs / birth certs,
- office clothes & shoes (to wear for interviews),
- a few clothes for Summer (season we arrived in) & Autumn
- medicine for diarrhoea/flu (the others can buy from pharmacies as there are some that open till late at night so we weren't too worried!)
- sports shoes (as we have to do LOTS of walking here compared to Sg!)
- Electronic goods such as laptop, digicam, 4-8 rechargable batteries
Err... I'm sure there were a few other things, but can't remember now... will add them in here again when I remember
Other stuff that we needed in the near future but were
not essential for the next 3 months, we packed in 4-5 boxes & shipped them over using via the Post Office (this is MUCH cheaper than going thru' shipping companies!). We spent about $500 in total shipping our stuff over, compared to min. $2K if we were to go thru' a shipping company. Things we packed included:
- Microwave (and in it we stuffed an iron, small radio, and clothes
)
- Toys we couldn't do without
- Books (cookbooks, uni notes, etc)
- my Coke collection
- Photo albums
When packing in a box, always try to put those black garbage bags around the inside of the box, then place your stuff inside, so in case of rain/damage, your stuff doesn't get damaged/fall out. Posting thru' the Post office is safe, especially if you insure the box (approx. $5 each box)
Just travel light when you get there, and worry about other imp. things like finding accommodation, settling in. Melbourne is a cosmopolitan city so you can find almost anything you're looking for, so no use bringing too much stuff & finding out you could've bought the stuff in Melb!
Take note of the end-of-financial-year sales in Myer & lots of other stores, Harvey Norman etc. for buying furniture, kitchen goods etc. This'll happen around June-July. Also good for buying winter clothes then. Winter clothes: just buy the minimum first, and after winter when stock is cheaper, then u can buy more as shops will be clearing their stock for new season's stock. I find that Feb/Mar is a good time to buy summer wear. Also you may like to go to DFO (Direct Factory Outlet) to get your stuff
Hmm.. can't think of what else to add, will come back here when I think of more things to say!
