What to pack for migration?

The bank thing could be a pain. If it is an international bank, chances are that you'd have to go out of your way to find an ATM. If you're there for the long term, it's best to set up a local account ASAP.

I opened an account with Commonwealth Bank in Singapore and banked in $$. When I arrived, straight away I could use the account and the ATM card was waiting for me to be picked up.

I say change all that you need only. Period.
The exchange rate now is so bad, it's best to leave your funds with an investment prog/portfolio manager in singapore until the economy shapes up, if not you're on the losing scheme of things. -

But yes. I am also in the same delima about packing.
i was hoping to reduce everything to a mere big duffle bag and a small luggage.
items currently in duffel bag now:
Hello Kitty Towels x 2
Hello Kitty Single bedsheet, pillow case & blanket.
Hello Kitty cushion cover
2 different gun holsters & belts, ear muffler & safety glasses (me into gun sports)
2 pairs of cargo pants
Stationary: Pens, pencils, liquid paper, puncher, stapler rulers, pen knife, tailors measuring tape, erasers & hi-liters.
I've yet to throw in the huge folder holding my certs and legal docs & a ream of A4 papers. (hear that they dont have A4 size papers there.)
I also hear that I should bring along a decent bolster. Should I?
BTW, I am thinking of Las Vegas USA. -
How long are you planning to stay there?
Uhh, towels, bedding and stationery? Why do that when you can get it there? Just bring clothes, your shooting gear and that's it.
As for bolsters, I'm fairly certain you can easily find acceptable substitutes in Vegas.

I don't know if it's a good idea to bring pistol holsters with you. You and I know they're perfectly innocuous items, but the TSA stormtroopers manning the checkpoints at airports operate by a different set of rules, and will likely pull you aside for "extra attention" if they discover holsters in your luggage. Putting them in your checked baggage is no guarantee that they'll get through either; the TSA randomly selects checked luggage to be opened for additional screening after they've been checked in.
What will your immigration status be upon arriving in the States? It might be worth mentioning that, with very few exceptions, US visitors or residents who are neither PRs nor citizens are not allowed to purchase or own firearms.
And.... "Hello Kitty" bedsheets???

Oh ya , u better not bring the gun holsters ......and foreign aliens ( aka foreigners , non us citizens - that's what they call u ) are very firmly screened . And don't be surprised if immigration treats u like dirt . I remember wen I 1st emigrate (I was 12).. whole family brought as much as they can.. with most things turn out to be useless.
That time..I gave my mum my precious TAMIYA model car for packing (but it was never found again)
This time round I just bring cooking materials... sharkfin, maggi pastes, sauces, instant noodles, drink sachets, etc.
I dont think appliances or goods such as tv, vcr, dvd players are important. They add weight and u can probably find cheaper substitutes when you get there. Especially home grown brands like DSE (Dick Smith Electronics), TEAC, or chinese ones. -

I needed a fresh start and looking for some jobs in USA that would allow me to indulge myself in some shooting sports, flying and riding. All those are activities which are commonly frowned upon by the society here.
Anyone knows anyone who might need live in babysitter? -

those whose needs are simple, need pack almost nothing...
i guess i'll maintain that you need change of clothes, money, passport, shoes, basic toiletries (even that can be easily purchased) and you're set -

When I was in Oz the shoes there seemed more expensive than back here, and my aunt confirmed that. As for the cookbooks you can't take with you, why not give them to us? If you suddenly develop a craving for a particular dish we can always send you the recipe in cyberspace.

If you already have a contact in the US, I would suggest that you mail the holsters to him/her. But the question still remains: how do you intend to participate in IPSC and/or IDPA competition if you are not allowed to purchase and own firearms here? You'd have to borrow equipment from a local to compete.
Are you currently engaged in competitive shooting in Singapore? -
